A wrong way driver shot and killed by Milwaukee police sergeant.
MPD says that the driver was armed with a gun.
Our Stephanie Cork is on this story this morning.
She joins us live from the scene with the latest on the investigation,
like what we know and what we don't.
Hey, good morning
and Nicola right now we're basically as close as we can get
to the highway of course where this happened 47th and Washington.
Now this is close to one of the areas that police were telling people
to avoid overnight as they investigated this incident.
Let's break down the timeline that we know so far from police.
According to Chief Jeffrey Norman,
It happened around 8 15 last night near Lloyd Street
on State Highway 175.
Of course, that's just north of the stadium interchange.
The sergeant saw a truck make a U-turn and then police say
that truck started driving south in northbound lanes.
According to the chief, he called it into dispatch.
The sergeant that has tried to make contact with the driver, but police
say the driver then showed a gun and that's when the sergeant fired his gun
The driver died at the scene and one of the big questions we are still
working to learn this morning is whether the driver fired his gun.
We do know that that is something that's under investigation right now.
Another piece to this that we are still working to get details
on is video because the sergeant was not wearing a body camera and MPD
says that's because sergeants are not equipped with body cameras.
Only patrol officers are.
But they are reviewing multiple videos in this incident.
As to where that video came from, we don't know.
But take a listen to what we do know
from the chief last night during that news conference.
Still looking at that, but yes, he was outside the vehicle.
We don't know the extent of where
that contact with the sergeant happened.
And so those details will still be forthcoming as well.
Okay.
And as for the investigation into this, well,
West Dallas Police is the lead agency handling this.
And we're still getting details, too, as to where that video came from.
Again, no body camera at this point, but it will be released.
The videos that are part of the investigation within 15 days,
which is part of the standard operating procedure of Milwaukee Police.
Back to you.
All right, Stephanie, thank you very much.
