Breaking news from overnight,
a police shooting in West Phoenix is under investigation.
We're going to head out to about 79th Avenue and Van Buren.
Irene Snyder on scene right now.
You've heard it before, this is my job.
Good morning, guys. Yeah, we're out here right now.
It started around 10 o'clock last night and we're still on scene.
It's very active right now with about
a dozen police cars still out here this morning.
You can take a look and see the scene that we have right here now.
So again, this call came out around 10 o'clock last night. It started
as an assault at a convenience store near 75th Avenue in Van Buren.
The suspect's vehicle was found here around 79th Avenue,
the suspect standing nearby
when a helicopter flew overhead that suspect.
According to the police department,
the suspect pointed what appeared to be a gun at the chopper,
a police officer on the ground opening fire, hitting the suspect.
That's when, according to police,
the officers on scene rendered aid and took him into custody,
the Phoenix Fire Department transporting him
to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, only identified as being
an adult male around 69 years old.
Police say the investigation is going to take several hours,
and people will want to avoid the area.
This intersection is going to be shut down between,
I believe, 75th Avenue and 83rd Avenue on Van Buren.
Definitely for the rest of the morning,
maybe into the early afternoon as well.
And Phoenix Police Department will be investigating
the aggravated assault while DPS is investigating
that officer involved shooting and no officers were hurt.
We'll send it back to you guys this morning. Irene, thank you.
