The 6th begins with that reflecting
pool campaign pitch by President Trump,
his final message on the eve of tomorrow's midterms.
The event was meant to celebrate renovation work,
but the president also reflected
on Republicans' raise of the majority in Congress
and their fight to hold on to it.
Fox 2's Tom Fitzgerald live on the National Mall tonight.
Fitz, why was the president focused
on his vanity project with so much at stake tomorrow?
It's an important question, and the White House feels
that this renovation of the reflecting pool near the Lincoln Memorial
is an example of the president finishing what he started.
In a larger sense, that's their message to viewers
as they head into their midterms tomorrow.
But also remember,
this project has gone on for months with stops and starts.
BOTCHED WORK AND REDO OVERS AS THERE WERE CLAIMS OF VANDALISM
AND EVEN THE U.S. ATTORNEY
FROM D.C. HAD TO DROP THE CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST A MAN
WHO WAS CHARGED WITH VANDALISM.
THIS WAS THE SCENE TODAY AS THE PRESIDENT ARRIVED DOWN HERE
AT THE REFLECTING POOL WITH
THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR, DOUG BURGRAM, IN TOW.
NOW THE PRESIDENT WENT ON TO TALK ABOUT OTHER
PROJECTS THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
FIXING 83 FOUNTAINS AROUND D.C.
Cleaning out homeless encampments,
he also pointed to efforts against crime.
His deployment of the National Guard, which he says has gone
a long way, in Trump's words, in making D.C. safe and beautiful.
Across all of the entire capital,
we are making D.C. safe and beautiful again.
And our National Guard and other law enforcement partners have
made over 16,000 arrests, including over 3,000 narcotics arrests,
hundreds of gang members and dozens of murderers.
Now the president also made what we were told
were these final arguments on the midterm
elections today.
Now he did acknowledge that presidents of the past,
both Democrat and Republican, have
lost seats in the Congress.
During these midterm elections, but there's a lot on the line tomorrow
as the Republicans are trying to hold
on to their majorities in both the House and the Senate.
The president did bring back his offer
of a $5,000 check for adult Americans if Republicans
hold on to the majority.
However, he also went on to blast Democratic candidates and say that
his fight will go on. We fought for 250 years to make it great.
We're not going to let it be
be torn down by a bunch of people
that have failed everywhere they've been.
Because the ideologies that you're talking about,
various ideologies, they've always failed every single time.
So we'll defend our country,
our culture and our heritage for generations to come.
No matter what the outcome tomorrow, Donald Trump made it clear he
is not done putting his imprint on the District of Columbia.
The president talked to even more projects
moving forward beyond the reflecting pool.
He says he's going for final approval
of that arch at Arlington National Cemetery.
He's planning improvements at East Potomac Golf Course where he will,
he says, create a garden of heroes
with statues ranging from 250 to 500 in number.
We're live at the Reflecting Pool tonight.
Send it back in to Kenneth and Angie.
