And thank you, college students and parents of college students.
Listen up.
Your next big opportunity could be just around the corner.
The United Negro College Fund is helping students take
the next step with scholarships and internship opportunities.
And here today we have Arnica Jackson.
She's director of student development at Florida A&M University
and also is one of the heads of the fund.
Thank you so much for joining us this morning.
Thank you so much for having me. How are you?
I am wonderful, and I think our local students are going
to be even happier to know help is on the way.
Talk about UNCF. I'm very familiar
in the scholarship opportunities that you all provide.
Absolutely. Well, aside from the federal government,
UNCF is the number one provider of scholarships
to students trying to go to and through college.
And so what we are doing now is sharing information about internships
and fellowships because it is internship season.
And so we wanted to inform students about the opportunities
that we have with some of our partners and to also get students ready
as they prepare to go into the workforce.
When it comes to the scholarships in particular, is that for students
who plan on going to HBCUs or already attending HBCUs?
Who qualifies?
So we have over 400 programs
and so it just depends on what institutions the students are
interested in going to and what the criteria is.
But we have a myriad of eligibility so it's not
just for students attending HBCUs.
It just depends on the eligibility criteria for each program.
There's also the internship category in this as well.
You have some tips for students to
make sure they dress for success and hit all the right points.
Absolutely. So a part of our application process
is a one-way interview. And so we always tell students,
you know, to show up, first impressions.
Are the lasting impressions
and so when you are preparing going into your one way interviews
and as you are interacting with the hiring managers that you present
your best self and so you know dress for success at every point
because you never know what stage they want to hire you right
so you could you know be that person that stands out
in the initial interview and then you get an offer that first.
That first step. And so we always want
to make sure that students are prepared.
And so we do have or we offer opportunities for students
to work with us to get them ready with a part
of our opportunities that we have through UNCF.
There's also that huge student leadership conference.
And I know many students here would want to attend.
What are the deets on that?
Absolutely. And thank you for asking.
And so every year UNCF gets together all the students that have
been able to get an internship through our opportunities.
And so we get them together to provide them
with an opportunity to train them up,
get them ready to show up and show out as a part of their.
Their opportunities through internship.
And so right now, currently,
we have a few programs that are open with the Walt Disney
Company, which actually closes today.
So if students are interested in getting involved
or have a desire to work in entertainment,
I would tell them to go to opportunities.uncf.org
and put in the Walt Disney Company to search
for those opportunities,
as well as if they're interested in factual storytelling.
We have student opportunities for students with.
the National Geographic organization
so that they can come and join us and be a part of
SLC with over 200 students that are gathering,
working with our partners and being prepared
to go into internship and hopefully get hired.
Thank you so much, Ms. Jackson.
I want to put up those websites
so that people can certainly get on it and make sure they
register, especially for the one with the deadline today.
That's going to be crucially important.
And I'll end with this.
A mind is still a terrible thing to waste.
I know that's a wonderful thing to invest in.
You got it.
You got it for UNCF for a long time.
Thank you so much, Ms. Jackson.
We appreciate it.
Thank you for having me.
Have a good one.
Julie.
