Here's what's going on with Ivey Kelly. He's been locked up
for 26 years over a murder he says he did not commit.
Today was supposed to be his new trial, but it's been delayed.
Prosecutors say they cannot find a key eyewitness.
So let's back up here. This started in 1999.
Joe Ward was shot and killed outside of House and Robbins.
Kelly called Ward his best friend, but he got convicted
and sentenced to 30 years. Kelly claims prosecutors hid evidence,
including reports from the first detective.
That detective later pleaded guilty to federal racketeering.
Prosecutors insist they didn't hide anything important.
Now, fast forward to today.
Prosecutors told the judge they're not ready.
Kelly's lawyers pushed back, but it's a no-go.
So the new trial date is December 14th.
Now, someone with Blocks United Revolutionary
Network showed up to support Kelly,
as did all these people you see here.
He says the second trial shouldn't even be happening.
And, you know,
We don't think it's right that he has to go through this process again.
We don't think it's right that he's had to spend
the last three years inside Cook County Jail
on pretrial detention just to get to this point.
Kelly's been in jail since 2023.
That's when a judge overturned his conviction.
Prosecutors argue he is a threat to a witness.
Back in 2022, they said he could go free
if he admitted guilt. Kelly turned it down.
Today, prosecutors brought up worries again,
saying social media posts are identifying witnesses.
The judge did not an emergency
motion to deal with that. Kelly's defense says he's not involved.
