A significant earthquake swarm has occurred off the coast of Japan, featuring a primary 6.8 magnitude quake and a 6.4 magnitude event. Accompanied by over 160 aftershocks, the activity is centered near the Pacific and North American plate boundaries. While a tsunami warning was issued, recorded wave heights were minimal, posing no significant threat.
James Kaufman, World News Report Today.
Ladies and gentlemen,
we're having an earthquake swarm off the coast of Japan.
We've had both a 6-8 magnitude earthquake with a tsunami warning
and a 6-4 magnitude earthquake,
along with 30-plus additional earthquakes.
This is quite a scene over here.
We're going to take a look.
All right this is going to be right
on the Pacific North American plate boundary here
and it looks like one quake that's the 6-8 it's
a 6-4 right under as you can see and believe it or
not the USGS is telling us that there's 44 earthquakes there.
I believe that number to be
low. We'll take another look at it
on earthquakesandvolcanoes.com but this is quite a swarm.
It started right around when we had our X flare pop off,
if not exactly when we had our X flare
pop off. As you guys know, this is a very tricky area through here.
We have four plates pushing
all on each other here, and we have a lot,
a lot of plate tectonic boundaries and volcanic
ranges, as you can see through here.
Let's take a look at those. There's going to be a lot more
More than forty-four.
Can't even see Japan here.
It's the 6.8.
The USGS has called it out.
We're getting a default depth of 10 kilometers,
meaning they don't know how deep it really was.
We're going to zoom into this area.
It's going to be a lot more than 44.
A lot more.
It looks like over 100.
Look at this, folks.
Unbelievable.
Unbelievable.
And a lot of sizable earthquakes.
5.0, 5.5.
A 5.2, 5.1, 6.8, 5.0, unbelievable,
unbelievable, large earthquakes
and sizable earthquakes.
And as we discussed, it's going to be right,
right in between two plate boundaries.
It's going to be Pacific Plate over here.
It's part of the North American Plate that dips down here.
You can see that other plate boundary on the other side.
You can see active volcanoes in the area,
both awakening and in minor eruption here.
Another small swarm here.
Japan itself actually sits on several volcanic ranges.
You can see the volcanic ranges running in too.
And I will show you all, look at this,
everything in green has popped off within the last 10,000 years,
just a speck of time.
And everything that you see in, I would say,
black has popped off within 15,000 years.
It doesn't mean that this is all the volcanoes on Hawaii.
These are just the ones that have
been active over the last 15,000 years.
Which again, if the Earth is 4.4 billion years old,
it's just a speck of time.
Let's go take a look at some details of this big quake here, shall we?
So we have a huge swarm off the coast of Japan happening right now.
And the biggest quake out there is a 6.8.
We also have a 6.4.
This is a very strong one, 6.8.
November 9th, today, taking a look at the earthquake details,
USGS primary source of data, a 6.8, default depth 10 kilometers,
released 14.9 atomic bombs worth of energy.
So nothing to play around with a substantial or very strong earthquake.
Here is our Shake Reports map.
Only 26 people reported
this very strong earthquake.
Pretty unbelievable. I would think that most
of Japan would have reported it, but we only had
26 total reports come in.
All right, believe it or not, we've had over 160
Additional earthquakes right there in that swarm.
Over 160 aftershocks.
Unbelievable.
All right, let's compare quake data from different agencies,
starting out with the USGS, 6.8, 10 kilometers.
Australia, 6.8, 7.7 kilometers.
Germany, 6.6, 14 kilometers.
Raspberry Shake, 6.3, default depth, 10 kilometers.
The French came in at 6.37.
Default depth, 10 kilometers.
Europeans coming in at 6.8, at 4.9 kilometers, very shallow.
It is on the continental shelf there.
We've got Indonesia coming in at 6.6, default depth, 10 kilometers.
You can see with the asterisks down here,
a depth given as 10 kilometers
often means that the depth of the quake cannot
be determined with sufficient accuracy.
All right, next we have the Incorporated
Research Institute for Seismology.
Coming in at 6.8, 10 kilometers.
We've got the Italians coming in at 6.7, 9 kilometers.
And finally, the Japanese Meteorological Agency came
in with a mere 5.5 at 16 kilometers.
What a difference.
Over to the National Data Buoy Center.
We did have that tsunami warning.
And we do have...
A buoy in event mode right here,
station 21419 in the Kuril Islands, is popping off.
It looks like a substantial event,
but when we look at the details, the tsunami created
was only five centimeters, five centimeters in height,
enough to put that buoy in event
mode, but not enough to really be called a tsunami.
All right.
In summary, we've had a huge swarm,
163 thus far earthquakes, all in this swarm, and it
started in the middle of the night last night here
at central time in the U.S.
It's been ongoing, and you can see the biggest quakes were the 6-8
and the 6-4, and all these
other large quakes were also associated with this.
The 5-9, the 5-7, the 5-6, the 5-6, the 5-5, the 5-5, the 5-4.
Wow, a lot of shaking going on.
Again, 163 that have been reported thus far.
With that said, God bless, folks.
Stay safe out there.
