This Is Not A Rainbow! This Is A Virgabow!

James Kaufman, World News Report, today. And believe it or not, this is not a rainbow. This is a Virga bow. Virga bows are extremely rare meteorological phenomena where rainbows form within a curtain of Virga, which is rain that evaporates in midair before ever hitting the ground. Because the precipitation is disappearing into a layer of warm, dry air, air underneath the cloud deck you will see a vibrant splash of color hanging in the sky even though the ground all around you remains completely dry. This requires a high cloud deck dumping rain and a sharp layer of dry air underneath to evaporate the water and a low sun angle to pierce through. Like typical full arch rainbows, a Virga bow often looks like a vertical cascading sheet or a jagged partial curtain of color because it only reacts with the remaining evaporating droplets. They're most commonly spotted in dry, windy climates or desert regions such as the American West, the Australian Outback, or the edge of a rain shadow of the Chilean Patagonia, where dry air calms frequently and sits beneath passing storms. So this is extremely rare and not considered a rainbow, and I thought we should all learn something today. Please give us a thumbs up for this bit of knowledge, and please share this bit of knowledge with your friends and family. God bless you all.
