That's where we begin tonight at 10.
Thanks for joining us.
I'm Courtney Bryant.
Police say Elijah Parker tried to kill his mother,
then led police on a chase.
Tonight, he faces more than a dozen charges.
Fox 5's Denise Dillon is live in Cartersville tonight.
And Denise, this started in the parking lot of a grocery store.
That's right. Police say the son attacked his mom right here
in this parking lot when investigators got here.
The son was already gone and the search was on and it included
a high speed chase across county lines.
A son was actively trying to kill his mother by his own admission.
Cartersville police say 19-year-old Elijah Parker
was in a car with his mom in this parking lot last week
when investigators say he tried to strangle her.
Out of the blue, he just started choking her.
She felt she was going to lose consciousness.
The mom ran to a nearby business for help.
The son jumped into the driver's seat and took off.
Police put out a lookout for the vehicle.
A couple of hours later,
police in Adairsville spotted it and tried to pull him over.
But investigators say instead of stopping, Parker sped up,
hitting speeds close to 100 miles an hour into Gordon County,
where he crashed into another car and a stop sign.
Parker was taken into custody.
He was questioned as to some of why he ran.
He did say that his intent was to kill his mother.
And he failed because she had escaped the vehicle.
Police say while this case may sound unusual and tragic,
it is a case of domestic violence, something they see a lot of.
They say they never know what to expect,
and they know to never take cases of domestic violence lightly.
During this month, actually, Domestic Violence Awareness Month,
it goes to highlight the dangers of domestic violence,
and no community is immune to it.
And Parker is charged with aggravated assault,
theft, and false imprisonment,
and that is on top of more than 10 traffic violations,
and he didn't even have a driver's
license. Reporting live in Cartersville, Denise Dillon, Fox 5 News.
Wow, pretty disturbing details
in that case. Denise, thanks.
