A heartbreaking goodbye in Van Zant County today as a mother
and her four kids were laid to rest.
Loved ones and community members attended the funeral service
to support the two survivors of the house fire
and to remember the lives tragically cut short.
Five lives, one family, and a loss too great for words.
Friday afternoon, loved ones and
Van Zandt County community members poured
into the Main Street Baptist Church in Grand
Saline, not just to mourn,
but to remember 27-year-old Jasmine Henson and her four kids,
Robert, Troy, Levi, and Avery,
who all died when a fire engulfed their home in Canton
on October 21st.
Cameras were not allowed inside
of the church during the funeral service,
but Danielle Giordano spoke to our crew outside on behalf of the Henson
and Mitchell families.
This is what it means
when we all come together with so much division in the world
today. This is a true example
of how nothing really matters outside of kindness and compassion.
And I think that's being shown.
The fire not only left behind a destroyed house,
but it left a father without his partner
and a seven year old boy without his mom and four siblings.
Cody Mitchell and their seven year old
son Grayson were the only two survivors.
Now they face the unimaginable task
of moving forward without their loved ones.
But in the midst of grief,
they are still choosing to focus on gratitude,
sending this message to a community
that has wrapped its arms around them.
In the middle of such indescribable pain,
all of you have reminded us that there is still
so much good in this world.
You have shown us what it looks like
when neighbors truly take care of neighbors,
when communities bond and come together,
when complete strangers choose to carry
part of someone else's burden. As they say their final farewells,
this is their final request. We ask for one thing above all else.
We ask that you continue praying for our family.
Please continue praying for the Henderson and Mitchell families.
Not only today, but in the days,
weeks, months, and years to come.
Investigators are still looking into what caused the fire.
The community has set up several ways to help the families.
