James Kaufman, World News Report Today.
A very rare ground-level solar event,
or GLE, hit Earth yesterday.
Yesterday's X-5-class solar flare from sunspot 4274
hurled a series of energetic protons towards Earth in quick succession.
Some of the particles were so powerful,
they penetrated the atmosphere all the way to the ground.
This was a very significant event,
says Professor Clive Dyer of the Sarray Space Center.
Quote, neutron monitors around the world
were detecting this event for off the hook.
This was called a ground level event or GLE.
Ground level events of this magnitude are very rare.
This one is comparable to the GLE of December 13, 2006, said Dyer.
That makes it at least a 20-year event.
For comparison, during the 2006 ground-level event,
passengers on air flights experienced a peak dose rate of radiation
that was estimated as a 20% increase
in the total effective radiation dose.
to a usual flight.
Something similar happened at the ground level yesterday. Analysis of
yesterday's ground level event will help us prepare for larger events,
such as a repeat
of the February 23, 1956 event,
which is soon to have its 70th anniversary.
And gave a thousand volt increase in radiation at 40,000 feet,
says Dyer, a thousand times the radiation.
Meanwhile, the solar protons are peppering satellites,
creating hailstorms in the imagery systems as seen on Lascaux C3.
And we have just been hit by the associated coronal mass ejection
that took less than 24 hours to arrive here on Earth.
Ladies and gentlemen, we did just get hit by this third CME.
We're not sure how powerful this geomagnetic event will be,
but we'll soon have readouts
and information available at NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center.
God bless.
Our first ground-level event since 2006, and,
well, we haven't seen one more powerful since
1956.
No one.
Enjoy a 20% increase in radiation,
and especially a 1,000% increase in radiation levels.
