Well Halloween is just around the corner
and that means a lot of candy over the next couple
of days and weeks. So what's the best approach
that parents can take here? Should they let their
kids enjoy their candy haul right away
or should they stagger it out over the next couple of days
and weeks? Well we asked one Guelph dentist for her advice
and also to rate what the best candies
are from best to worst for your teeth.
Let them enjoy like their favorite candies and then you gotta,
parents, we just gotta take them
away later. You gotta find creative ways to take them away later
because snacking them throughout
the year isn't going to be great either
or throughout the months or the weeks leading,
following. So I would say please don't let them enjoy all of them
and definitely don't let them
snack throughout. Like the day of Halloween,
like for tomorrow, I would say they're gonna
want to definitely enjoy their favorite candies,
brushing and flossing, right? So brush and floss
before you go to bed, but if they are snacking
on them throughout like the following day or the
following week, definitely having water after is a really good idea.
It just neutralizes the acid
and that can prevent, help prevent cavities. Okay.
All right. So we have a few candies in front here.
How would you rate them in terms of maybe healthiest
to maybe least healthiest for your kids' teeth?
Okay, so first of all, all candy, not healthy at all.
But if we had to choose, which would be the best out of all of these,
the best or the worst for our teeth, none of them are the best.
But if we had to choose, I would say the least causing cavity issues
that I would have would be with, Aero would be good, Coffee Crisp,
Kit Kat Bar is a good one.
And Smarties, because this is purely chocolate.
There's nothing like sticky
or caramelly that I'm worried about with these guys.
But then when you get into like the lollipops,
this is like the Tootsie Pops.
So this has like that sticky stuff in the middle, right?
And it's hard candy.
This is even worse because biting on it, especially kids with braces,
retainers, braces can break off.
And plus this stays in your mouth longer.
So you're going to be more prone to decay.
And then, oh my God, I haven't seen these in ages.
The candy sticks, Popeyes, same.
The kids aren't biting on it.
They're going to be sucking on it, which again,
you just have sugar and food just sitting
in your mouth longer.
It's going to be more prone to decay.
