It's a fall weekend, a one-two punch here starting
with tomorrow night's famous Village Halloween Parade
followed by immediately 50,000 runners all taking over
the five boroughs for the marathon on Sunday.
And Fox 5's Francis Wang is live in the East Village
as we gear up for what promises to be one of the busiest weekends
and most high-energy 48 hours of the year.
Francis, what can you tell us so far?
Hey, Ryan. Yeah, well, from Halloween costumes,
which we're already seeing, to running shoes,
New York City is getting ready for just
a back-to-back weekend of busy events. You can
see here, though, in the East Village,
not only are they getting into the Halloween spirit already,
but they are getting ready security-wise.
You see the metal barriers all along these streets,
and just about every pole is reminding people.
You do not want to park here over the weekend.
Now, tomorrow night, the annual Village Halloween Parade returns
with thousands of New Yorkers
expected to dress up and take the streets.
This year's theme is body and soul.
So we're talking giant puppets, elaborate costumes,
plenty of over-the-top creativity.
Legendary downtown performer Joey Arise
will lead the way as Grand Marshal,
and the parade kicks off at 7 tomorrow night, making its way up.
6th Avenue from Canal Street to 15th Street.
And the best part, it is free and anyone with costume can join in.
Now, once the Halloween festivities wrap up,
the city will be getting ready for yet another massive event.
The New York City Marathon, of course.
Crews have been busy painting
the iconic blue line along the marathon route.
55 gallons of paint helping guide
those nearly 60,000 runners through all five boroughs.
Over in Central Park, the finish line,
ready for runners to have their moment of glory in this year's race.
Extra special, as you mentioned, it's marking 50 years.
Since the marathon first expanded to all five boroughs back in 1976,
but the celebrations
actually start today
with the marathon opening ceremony bringing together runners from all
50 states and 150 countries.
Among those getting ready to hit the course Sunday,
last year's men's champion who is
betting on making it two in a row.
Wow.
New York City Marathon being the most prestigious marathon,
I like the people, the spectators
along the course. This makes it unique.
I will be so happy to be part of this historic event,
the fifth anniversary, to win back-to-back.
And with all those festivities, of course,
you can expect some major crowds and road closures over the weekend.
So whether you are heading out for Halloween, trick-or-treating,
heading out with your family for lunch, dinner, running,
spectating, whatever it may be, you do want to be prepared.
Ryan, we'll send it back to you for now.
All right.
