Despite organizational turmoil and trade rumors surrounding key players, the team remains competitive, bolstered by a new wave of young talent that is filling critical gaps in physicality and goaltending.
The Detroit Red Wings have found their next stars
as two rookies are playing absolutely
lights out, with one of them now opening up
a very interesting door to a goaltender trade.
We're going to break that down
and much more in this episode of Red Wings Digest,
including Dylan Larkin not on the ice for practice this morning,
and much more including
how this team is able to continue winning games
with all this turmoil around the team,
the organization the fan base ownership
so many questions we're going to try and answer some of
them here on this episode but before we get into all
of that a quick reminder to hit that subscribe
button we've noticed that about 85% of you guys
who watch these videos on a regular basis are not
subscribed to the channel so if you want to stay up
to date with everything that's going on with
the Red Wings, Mark and I are here every single
day giving you guys updates from trade rumors and
reports all the way to MBN we got to talk about him man he
is lights out this guy is unbelievable
this year and Mark in an off season where we had
so many questions about this player because of how
last season ended with not just the team
but the player himself because it wasn't impressive his
time in the NHL at the end of last year
but you know what is impressive uh this now and it sounds
like the hype is real and that is from Stephen Ellis
that yes this is actually a good player and
we we kind of knew that right like this is a player in the AHL
who was ripping it up he went
to the World Championships you know you
were talking about it in the summer Mark that in the
summer at the World Championship maybe not the summer
but the spring you know he was absolutely
lights out in that tournament he looked like one
of the best players and now he looks like one of
the best young players in the entire national
Hockey League one thing that i want to point
out before i throw it over to you this guy
is hitting everything that moves it's not just the
skill and putting up points
and you know all of that which we knew came with his game we knew that
about his game he is throwing the body around he
is making it tough to play against him both
on the score sheet and physically he's hitting
literally again everything that moves he's sixth
in the NHL not just rookies in the NHL in hits
so mark what do you make of MBN so far this season
he's been fantastic and we have one other rookie to talk about too
because out of nowhere it just
looks like the uh you know the goaltending some
of the rookies on this team like they're in really
good shape in in that way with MBN the biggest thing
is now is looking at a guy of course this
is a team where there's a lot of bad things floating around
of course you have an unsigned
guy you still need to trade your former captain
but MBN is the brightest story when it comes out
of the Detroit and this is not hating on guys
DeBrincat's having a great year he got his
extension Raymond Seider all these guys
but MBN what we're getting out of such a young player
stepping into an organization not only in a bottom six role
but in a top role within this team
producing goals assists physicality this is what we
were missing last season of course losing key
guys JVR Patrick Kane all these specialists
that came in to score MBN is just better than these
guys probably combined at this point
and not hating on Patrick Kane he put in some decent
years here but again Darius this has
been a revolutionary story within this group and
genuinely i don't even think he's done yet there's
so much room for him to continue to grow
you can see this from Stephen Ellis too
and he had an article on it this morning i want to put
the link in the description so go check it out
there's some really good insight in here he said
that Red Wings fans have wanted a forward
who could hit hard and strike fear into their opponents
consistently and not only that again like
this is the thing that was missing from the team last
year and something that i was talking about
in the summer mark that it comes from within it's not
like you add a bunch of enforcers to the bottom
of your lineup and all of a sudden your team is
tough it comes from within some
of your best skilled players have to be the toughest players
throwing the hits finishing the their checks
and all of that and this is a guy that does this he is
hard to play against right like he's got
the skill he can put the puck in the back of the net and
he's gonna hit you he's gonna come flying at you
and that is that's hockey man when you're thinking
of like the 90s early 2000s like
when we grew up thinking of hockey like some of the best players
where those like power forward types
and now there's like a new age power forward where you
could be you know six feet tall
but the way that you play could be considered a power forward now
look at a guy another prospect Justin Carbonneau
who's been labeled that as well with the Saint
Louis Blues MBN is kind of that player too where you know he's
not a six foot six like enforcer
power forward like we used to know like 20 years ago
but he is a guy that can score can take it to
the net and he hits you right he has that physicality to his game
so he's been fantastic
and it's not just hits by the way he's just
been fantastic in all areas of the ice applying
pressure cycle game all that type of stuff
so he's been really really good so um he's going to
continue to develop he's not you know
a bona fide elite player in this league just yet but he is
definitely moving there and again after
a really slow start to his NHL career um this is this is
more than encouraging this is like oh no he's arrived
and he's going to continue to grow and
by the way he's still a rookie right
so really really good stuff there and you can see from
Stephen Ellis as well his presence has made that trio
so dangerous and that second line has been
so good right and Finney
at center like credit where credit's due to him too like you know
filling in that center position
so Mark do you have any final thoughts on MBN and just kind of
that dynamic second line that they got going
as well I mean with Finney he was the story of last
season a guy stepping in into this team
and becoming a top six player that helped them push
and towards the end of the season looking like maybe they
were going to sneak into a playoff
spot but now with MBN this is a team year after year
and we've said it so much yes there's some
bad things happening around but there's so much depth
so many young pieces within this team that
to our fault as well we don't talk about enough
because this is a team that's so many issues but
looking at this MBN is just the start of a long list
of positive young players that are going to
make an impact not only this year
but the future of this team genuinely looks better than people
probably give it credit for and his ice time slight uptick
in that and you also have a uh
a slight downturn in his last five games
but he's still on pace for what he did um you know
early on in the season he's going to continue to get better
and i think that's uh really good
they're also playing better teams too right
so keep that in mind they're actually playing like
the edmonton oilers uh the win there just
a couple nights ago that was fantastic too so
really good stuff from the red wings despite all this turmoil right
and he's been super consistent
uh and you can see this too from steven ellis keep
in mind all of his offense is coming five on five
he's been really really good this year
so uh he's been fantastic and again just uh super consistent
i think in terms of just shot uh production too
so i want to see more out of him uh take it you
know continue to build off his game take it to the next level
but i think we got a bit of a star
brewing here and with a former first round pick you would hope
that that is the case now another
guy we've got to talk about is michael postava
and he's been fantastic as well he's always been
really good i mean even in the ahl his numbers
were really really good he's an undrafted free
agent signing he came through he crushed it
in grand rapids he gets his first career nhl start
against the hottest offense in the nhl ladies
and gentlemen against connor mcdavid leon drai
side one of the hottest teams in the entire league
and he wins he wins he he has ice in his veins and
he comes in he wins and there's
so many reasons to be nervous going into that game but he it's
his first NHL start he got action you know obviously
a couple weeks ago uh not weeks ago
sorry a game ago against the Vancouver Canucks
but um you know an .893 save percentage in this game
not horrible but about league average for what it
is right now you know and they go into um you
know the shootout they win
this game great performance Mark what do you make of Michael
Kostava because we've been talking about him
for a little bit too and last season there was kind of
rumblings like hey who are they going to trade
is it going to be him is it going to be Kostava because
somebody's going out the door with Trey Augustine coming
in this year uh they ended up keeping him
looks like it could be a really good decision
because he looks fantastic and could this open
the door with the pipeline that they have in that could
this open the door to trading John Gibson
this year i mean looking at this guy he came
in for Grand Rapids last year in the playoffs and
stole the show completely we spoke about a bunch
of them during their run in the playoffs but
getting up now and watching him play he doesn't
seem too nervous between the pipes now of course
he's not a top tier starting goaltender in the NHL just yet
but looking at the kind of development
curve of this guy going from a guy that stepped
in signed with Grand Rapids played with them took
over the starting spot now getting the call up
and of course you still want to leave your other
goaltenders down in Grand Rapids to continue getting
into it getting their feet wet when it
comes to pro hockey but again with Kostava man
this is a guy that's continuously impressing at
every single level yes it's
not a .940 save percentage it's not a shutout in the game
but that's an offense that lights up goaltenders every single night
and for his first NHL start
he did an incredible job I think
with John Gibson being a UFA at the end of the season
there's going to be some genuine talks around
the goaltending of this team who's going to be
going out the door because of course it's starting to get crowded
which is a good thing you have
other guys stepping through as well
but Darius again this is a team that genuinely has so much
young talent oozing through each and every crack absolutely
and uh it's something that they needed
we talked about it last year there's too many passengers
on this team and they were all older
players and now they're letting the kids play
and they look pretty good and you see the quote from
Todd McLellan after the last game this group's
been you know really good considering all the
stuff that they've gone through and uh it's been pretty resilient
and that it has been if you take
a look at the standings today like they're they're
in the mix they're in the mix man despite everything
that's happened and you know could you imagine
if Dylan Larkin didn't request a trade like if
everything was just you know great right
and they signed Simon Evanson what kind of a position could
this team be in with like a vibe like
that right like they probably could have been top of the
conference again like they were to start last year
of course we know it fell off a cliff in
March like it has last two seasons
but uh they could be in a really good spot right now but all
of that you know included they are actually still
in a really good spot it's pretty incredible so
shout out to the Red Wings and the guys really really playing
and they are borderline elite in
the goaltending department last thing before you wrap up here mark
um dylan larkin was not at red
wings practice this morning a lot of people
are making a lot of out of it you know oh he's out
because he's gonna get traded he's
not getting traded yet i think he's gonna get traded but he's
not getting traded yet uh and it was announced
that it was just maintenance from him and that
was from elliot friedman a bunch of different insiders
so uh you might be dealing with something
he's gonna get traded but i don't think it's today
so guys let us know how you feel in the
comments below about everything we discussed
today lots going on with the red wings a lot
of reasons to be excited about the future
of this team with some of these guys but of course
some major decisions still to be made
with simon edvinson and dylan larkin
