Community members gathering to light the night
in honor of a Valley teen who was murdered
and tonight it marks three years since Preston Lord
was severely beaten at a Halloween party in a Queen Creek neighborhood.
And he died just a few days later from those injuries.
Fox 10's Nicole Christine is live
from the neighborhood where many gathered to honor him.
Nicole. Well good evening Mark and Ellen.
So Preston Lord's family tells us that this is a way every year
to gather on the anniversary in order to honor Preston Lord.
life his legacy and the larger movement
for change now associated with his name the tragedy
is just as real today as it was three years ago
for us as the orange Arizona sunset turned to
dark sky Wednesday evening orange light continued
to glow in a Queen Creek neighborhood during a
light the night vigil for Preston Lord Wednesday
marking three years since police say Lord was
fatally beaten by seven other teens during
a Halloween party. Lord's family
says turnout at the vigil means the world to them.
It's testament to the fact
that teen violence is still prevalent
and the community cares about it. Also
present at the vigil,
the families of Jeremiah Avias and Daniel Sublaski, two
other victims of teen violence in the valley.
The commonality is that we've
lost children and that's a different kind of grief.
I met Roy at the last
vigil last year. He came up to me
at the end holding a picture of his son and I
said, what are you doing here?
And he said, my son got killed. He said, I don't know
what to do, where to go. I just am here. I've been to court with Olga
several times. She's a single mom.
She is very strong but still very broken.
Meanwhile, the Lord family waits
for justice to be served for several of the
young men accused in Preston's death.
Navigating the court system is very hard
and it's always a moving target and when you think
something is coming up and you're just going to start going to trial
or start making progress
on the case and then something changes
and so we just try to roll with the punches.
And while the Lord family continues to fight
for justice in court, they also continue to
advocate for teen violence prevention education not only in classrooms
but also in every household.
Tonight, live in Queen Creek, Nicole Christine, Fox 10 News.
