Record High Sea Levels on The California Coast
Oct 26, 2026
Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe video documents severe coastal erosion and the impact of extreme high tides on various beachfront properties and cliffs. The narrator observes structural damage to hotels, crumbling cliffs, and the urgent installation of sand-filled \"trap bags\" to protect bluffs from an impending \"king tide\" amplified by a Kelvin wave.
here's the hole in the surfing sand oh you
got it good oh my gosh yellow tagged house
look at how much
of the cliff has fallen right here
that was a better one dude you don't want
the big one i know it's kind of the waves
are bigger than i thought they'd be oh my gosh pretty
good palapa
down there we're
checking out
the surfing
sand with beast
tv it's
an hour after
high tide and boulders
and stuff are still exploding up into the pool over here at this
little hotel yeah it looks like there might
be some new cracked glass on the front of it so
we're just gonna sit
and watch for a little bit there's some waves just going
nuclear onto the onto the front
of this hotel right now we're live at the surfing sand
look at this look at this i think there might be more shattered glass
this one's really bad
wow what is that thing
whole surfboard out
there boulders that are
blowing up over
the glass oh boy
this one's bad well you weren't
wrong about that that was
almost to the third story i think looks like
someone's moving out of their house too many
waves hitting their front door it's
not looking much better over here at the Surfin Sand
really was hoping there'd be more sand in front of here by now
but i think this wall just
keeps on keeps on making the waves scour the any sand
or any boulders that they wash up to it
oh my gosh that thing
was nuts hold up we just watched
a crazy one explode that was a big one
no you got it good
you got it good
or it's a bog town bog town
bogging apart that one
the agate stairs
look like they're
holding on by a
thread let's see
what we got we found
someone's broken surfboard out there i'd love
to know the story of how that thing got so beaten
and battered i bet you someone lost it into the rocks the other day
and it just got demolished
in the rocks blow
tiger some sand
in the cave
a new development
the montage might
have a ramp
problem whoa oh yeah looks like
that whole part of the bottom ramp
is getting undermined the
montage has a crack and it's the one
in beef's bald head no just kidding they actually have
something going on over here check this out
the cliff has fallen right here and that's a lot
wow they've got a project ahead of them see what
this little set does down here keep in mind it's
like two hours after high tide waves
are still getting pretty close to the base of that thing
the beach is washing up so far it's covering
the covering the sign here look at how much sand is
here this is that Gulf Island beach i
was talking about earlier you can see where parts of the
railing are getting all wonky these guys are doing
a tarp tarp job everyone's getting ready for the
king tide i don't think that's gonna do much you
get waves washing up over this wall but they might
be lucky in that swell's supposed
to die during the king tide new
tracks charging it look at all
this concrete down here you got a snorkeler
and a little harbor seal cruising where'd that guy go
oh he's getting up on the rock come on buddy you
got it, West Street, the growing cave I think uh
there's definitely a fair amount of new new rock
that has shed off that cave man there's some sand
here pretty much never go go down to this beach
because there's not really a rideable wave but
figured i'd come check it out
and just see what the sand's doing looks like there's an interesting
part of the cliff over here that might have shed recently probably
not related to high tide but
definitely fresh rock that just fell
from up above it's crazy how some beaches are just
completely gone and then others have have all
the sand i think this used to be like a at least six
foot high sign freshly shed rock
that's pretty fresh probably happened in the last day or two
fell down from up there i'm gonna bet you
this rock probably falls this winter things looking
a little sketch kind of insane
that it's actually still standing
looks super top heavy to me yeah
this thing's gonna go
what's up more beach
coming to El Morro
awesome insane it
just got rained on
pretty good we're back down here at the El Morro crack
and we're here at a peak low tide on the 22nd of
october and we're gonna come check it out tomorrow morning
when it's a super high tide i think we
have like a six foot high tide um tomorrow morning
and then you incorporate the Kelvin wave into that
and it's probably going to be closer
to a seven foot high tide in the coming week like monday
tuesday we have like 6.6 foot high tides
and with the kelvin wave on top of that it'll probably be
the highest tides that i've ever seen in my life
so that'll be interesting to see how the beaches
hold up with high tides like that how the beaches
and the cliffs hold up with high tides like that
these guys are kind of in a race against time
to put these sandbags in front of the Elmo cliff
and they're doing a pretty amazing job they have quite
a system going over there where they're
taking sand putting it down a conveyor belt
and then moving it into those trap bags
which they're going to just build basically
a big barrier from the ocean to protect that bluff over
there and uh yeah I think it's going
to be really fascinating to see how it holds up on these
these massive tides that we're expected to have
in the next next few days but all in all i think
caltrans is doing an amazing job of of trying
to secure this thing as best they can in the in the
situation that they're given
and it's a bummer that this didn't happen a little sooner and could
have been prevented maybe a little bit easier
but yeah they're doing the best they can dang
i want
to see
the sand uh
the sand
siphon
pretty
cool we
have a
fossilized
shell look
down and i
thought it was a rock but pretty certain that is a
fully beautiful fossilized shell score these are
the things we do to give you the El Morro report
oh yeah it's definitely not clean water it's
definitely
rain water it
looks like
at low tide
you can
actually walk
the beach over
here pretty
well looks
a little
precarious
precarious
look at these
stairs not much
holding
that up like
down here at low tide it's like there's a little break
in the sets we're gonna charge it over there
could be sketchy
bars sticking out here's
the hole
in the servant sand
little house in there
it's
interesting
it looks
like it's
built
on built
on like
natural
rock it's
like
they're
trying to do some last minute make a barrier
of some sort we're stairs over here those were
definitely stairs at one point pretty cool to be here
at low tide right standing on this wall that
had waves exploding over it and up to like the second
and third story of that building this
morning so i would have died standing here
this morning here's that same beach that we shot this
morning
but on low tide
pretty pretty
nice and calm
on the low tide
so it's a five
foot high
tide right now
and in a couple days it's gonna
be a six six it's pretty hard
to imagine we're down
at the crack at peak high tide it's supposed to be like a 5.6
or 5.3 high tide this morning and
it's definitely more like a six with the Kelvin wave
and all so waves are definitely washing up
and hitting the base of their tarp job
and it looks like they're even washing over those big
sandbags the trap bags that they put down there yeah it's just
an extremely high tide with this
Kelvin wave looks like there's a lot of muddy water
which is a sign of new cliff being eroded
and waves definitely washing up into that thing yeah it's going
to be pretty interesting to see
what happens on monday tuesday
when we have a six foot high tide with another additional foot
of water because of the Kelvin wave so seven
and a half foot high tide maybe could be the highest
tide that I've ever seen in my life
and I don't even think we're gonna need waves for that to
impact this bluff over here I mean even
if there's just ocean water sloshing back and forth into the
cliff side could be pretty crazy pretty insane
to just see the ocean completely flowing over those
trap bags I kind of thought that those would
be high enough to actually block waves from going
into the cliff and I and I think it will
do that when they have them completely laid out around the
base but it'll probably act as like a little bit
of a outer reef that'll make the waves break
before they wash up and hit the cliff
but right now it just looks like the waves are washing over
it and still almost getting up to the cliff
so they've got a lot more trap bags to lay too they're
like one tenth of the way there they might
not be able to get these things completely put down
before
the
king
tides
on
Monday
and
Tuesday
I
haven't
been
down to
St Ann's
and a
lot of
railings
came completely unclogged both of them
on both sides i've never seen that that's wild at least
we know the lifeguard stand's not going anywhere
i don't know what those are from they might have
just been covered in sand this whole time they might have
been here for a really long time but
covered in sand so you couldn't see them
and now they're exposed i don't know rebar coming out here
you know
there's
only like
20 blimps
in the
world
that are
operational
i saw
it last
night too
yeah i feel like it's been getting some action every day i've
been seeing it a bunch
i think there are so few because it's
so expensive i think they run on helium
and so it's like super expensive to actually use them
still getting wash ups on the dropping tides
yeah we're like two hours past high tide now
novelties
vermic seems
to be working
sperm seems
to be working
pretty damn
well actually
