Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe video documents coastal erosion and unusual ocean conditions along the Southern California coast. The narrator visits The Wedge and Crystal Cove to observe significant land loss, including a massive crack extending toward the Pacific Coast Highway, while explaining the scientific impact of El Niño and Kelvin waves on sea levels and marine ecosystems.
Macaulay's news and search reports.
That's what everyone's calling my thing now.
Fast times in Southern California.
Fast times.
We're gonna do a quick little session at the wedge
and then go show you your favorite thing to see,
the crack in the hill.
See if there's any progression of the Crystal Cove crack
and then just do another little run by Laguna Beach.
Check out some spots that have been seriously compromised
insane summer waves
and yeah this this morning we actually have some really fun
surf paired with offshore winds
so it's gonna be looking very pretty today I
think hopefully we get some skim waves
that wedge all right back to you with
the crack later usually there's
not that patch of rocks over there that is
completely new to me I've never seen
that but apparently this jetty used to
be called the hook go start all
the way out there hook into here and that was
end of the hook like like a candy cane
so where we're standing right now is rocks as well but
these haven't been uh unearthed probably since it was built
which is pretty crazy i'm not a wedge
historian but that's just what i've heard
and typically the sand extends like well past that
little outcropping rocks yeah normally we're we're skim boarding past
that danger high surge sign
the best days at wedge i've ever had
are all skimming way out past that danger high surf
sign this side is coming off a completely new part
of the jetty and it's a completely
different
wave
wow
oh
my
gosh
you
can
see
how
eroded
it
is
even
over
here
perfect
conditions
for wedge offshore winds
and just a perfect little skim day what the hell that's a full-on
airbag probably not good that thing
was low dang every day i come here there's something crazy
that's going on it's insane
this is a looks like they're rescuing someone right where the cliff
zone is hopefully the cliff didn't like fall down with cars on it
or something but that helicopter
is definitely right at the zone it was like there
and then it was gone just wrapped around the
corner wow look how brown that water is from the cliff
that's for sure like three inches lower
than it was yesterday yeah
and then yesterday they're measuring it all the way over here
which is it goes basically up to pch
that's really close to the road yeah that's basically
on the road it cracks up to the road it basically cracks
that there might even be some asphalt like
right around there look it goes all the way through
to oh there it is again pops up right
there and you can see it down the line yeah
that's pretty scary look at that chunk that
calved off yeah it's like a glacier calving
so i guess the crack really didn't look all that
much different today i do think
that every day there's probably it's probably the cliff has
probably been coming down a little bit
because that shadow is looking a little deeper every day
you could definitely see the crack pretty easily
the crack going up really close to PCH some
Caltrans people today checking it out again there
is some medevac helicopter checking it out and a
lot of mud in the water which means
that there's definitely still some active erosion happening
and the interesting thing to think about
is that we're having this Kelvin wave from the El Niño
where basically tide gauges in California are reading
a foot above what is forecasted so a five
foot high tide is actually a six foot tide can you describe what
a Kelvin wave is yeah so Kelvin wave
is a phenomenon that happens
when there is an El Niño year what creates the El Niño is west
wind bursts and that's blowing wind
from the western Pacific near the like equatorial region
to the eastern Pacific
and is what makes the water warmer it basically blows from one side
of the Pacific to the other brings warm water
from one side to the other through these west
wind bursts and it piles all the wind
if it's consistently windy in one direction it kind of
basically moves the ocean from one side of the Pacific to the other
and piles the ocean on the
other side and it moves all that warm water
not only do you have like the ocean kind of getting
stacked up on itself but you also have warmer water
which leads to thermal expansion so like
the water being warmer means it it thermally expands
and it's actually larger so yeah that's
a lot to a lot to digest and i don't know
if i explained it super well no i think so and it also
it also affects certain aspects of the marine life
so for example like there's been a massive
die-off from the sea stars so because we don't have
the sea stars the sea urchins have proliferated
and because of that they're eating all the kelp
so we don't have the kelp forest so like it
trickles down in ways that don't affect it
in a typical year where we maybe have like a week or
too of warm water it's been months of warm water
the water was already like 70 degrees in like
june which you never get that warm water
in june it's now middle of october and it's still i was
trunking it this morning water was 70 degrees it's
been an insane summer i was just gonna pull off
here and see what's going going down over here i'm not a big town guy
but i do know what thalia used
to look like and it was waves used
to break out there now they're just breaking into the rocks
usually
the sand comes up
to this staircase
can i go get a clip
of the palapa
with that thing yeah
for sure dude
maybe not right
now the palapa
no beach down
there at all i hope
the sand's like
out there somewhere
still this could be
a problem at the end
of the month there's
not that much
swell in the forecast as of right now
this is for 10 27 10 28 look at this 6.6 feet in the morning
so that would be a seven that would be a 7.6 foot high tide
with the kelvin wave and if you have any
waves paired with a seven foot high tide that's gonna
be yeah almost in that like i've never seen
tide that high in my life i've never experienced
a kelvin wave like this in my life i mean you
don't even need waves probably with that high
of a tide for this bluff to continue to get eroded
i
came
down
here
to
eat
my
as
I
bowl
it
is
really
sad
this
is
such
a
beautiful
parking
lot
and it's just getting absolutely destroyed i
can't believe we just pulled over and watched
all that happen we watched a big set come
the moment they're pulling a palm tree out of the
the ground there's backwash
explosions in the background
every day if you're at
the beach long enough something crazy
is gonna happen something's bound to happen
the party truck now roll up
and open up a tiki bar
