See U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla of California visits Sacramento ICE facility

I want to come see for myself because you've heard about the surge, the increase in numbers of enforcement actions. A lot of times it's a holding center like this where you can see the numbers spiking pretty quickly. It was important to ask all of the basic questions, you know, not just the conditions that people are being held in, but what to access to counsel. Are they able to communicate with their family? If somebody is in need of medical attention, how is that responded to uh so uh not ideal uh conditions um i've seen better i've seen a lot worse this is just a snapshot for this morning this doesn't seem to indicate the spike but that's just today i can't speak for yesterday or the day before and i can't speak to tomorrow or next week it's important that we continue to have these oversight opportunities you know the good news is they showed up today without an appointment they did not call in advance uh and they were going to uh come in and look around answer my question that hasn't been the case every facility the staff is frustrated you know a lot of career staff that have been doing this job and it changes sometimes from administration to administration not the law we need to update our immigration system thoroughly uh but the policies that each of those stations ceases uh to do uh we talked a little bit about the conditions here and what happens with the folks that are taken into custody uh separate and apart from what we're seeing on the streets the level of physical force so the use of force is something that continues to be troubling and problematic it was very predictable when the Department of Homeland Security and ICE in particular hired so many people so quickly that they lowered the hiring standards going the training standards were near as it would lead to problems on the streets and that's something that we're going to need to address both in the short term and in the long term. The folks were taken into custody were you know pretty quiet. I can imagine their shock and clearly a look of sadness on their face because they don't know what's next. I did ask about the incident that We saw a couple of days ago in Brooklyn, the two takeaways here. One, they say, well, there's still under investigation where there's more information and possible they don't have both sides come out. So I'm eager to see that. They didn't share it with me. I did ask if that particular agent was based out of here. They confirmed it was. I asked if that particular agent was still working. And they said yes. So again, we see images like this of the use of force on the street. If there's a true investigation, somebody's usually taken, put on administrative leave until that investigation is completed. Look, women leaders are going to do their job, but the women community is right to be upset, just like the people of Fresno. I am not shocked at all that the Trump administration has chosen to try to increase the numbers right before the election. So the cruelty and the quantity of enforcement actions is clearly trying to send the message to discourage people from participation, to try to further instill fear and trauma into diverse communities. There's no bigger or diverse state in the nation than the state of California. For a reason why members of Congress need to continue to be able to do our job, conducting oversight, holding the department and the administration accountable.
