Exploding comet Mignot is still invisible to the human eye
and probably won't stay that way.
It will probably always be invisible to the human eye.
Some clickbait artists are getting plenty of views from comet Mignot,
but it's just dust in the wind.
There is an exploding comet in the morning sky.
Comet 220P Mignard was a nondescript speck
of the 17th magnitude in late May,
when it suddenly multiplied its brightness by 7,000-fold.
It was fading back towards obscurity when,
on August 5th, just four days ago, it exploded again.
The second burst actually magnified the comet by 650 times
and propelled the comet to a 7th degree magnitude comet,
an easy target for telescopes,
but still completely invisible to the naked eye.
We're looking at probably a 3 magnitude
or lower for visibility for a human eye.
This is what it looks like now.
It's at magnitude 6.7.
It's the best anyone can measure it without suitable companion stars.
The comet is in the constellation of Cetus.
Near the star Mu Ceti, best seen around 4 a.m. local time.
Its expanding atmosphere is already wider than seven arc minutes,
a quarter the size of a full moon,
with a short tail pointing away from the sun.
Some observers are already comparing 220p to Comet 17p Holmes,
which famously exploded in 2007.
Holmes, however, brightened a million times over,
became a bright naked-eye object that could be watched
and expanded from night to night.
No telescopes were required.
Telescopes monitoring 220P found debris
in its rich gas tail.
Some astronomers suspect
a fragment might have broken off the nucleus in May,
contributing to the new brightness exposing fresh ice to the sunlight.
If so, more explosions may be in the offing.
If we have one more Big Bang,
you may be able to see this comet without a telescope.
Right now, folks, it is a telescope-only situation,
but it looks like it is breaking up.
With one more explosion or breakup,
it very well could be visible to the human eye at night.
please give us a thumbs up and share let
y'all see this in different
spectrums interesting see that
tail go by it i want to show you something else uh there's something
that goes by it right here
another orbit of some kind
and then you'll see it come through right here so there's a lot a lot
going on out there a lot more than we would ever imagine
that said god bless please share and
subscribe give us a thumbs up guys we need it
and always remember that anything's possible in
bizarro world
