James Kaufman, World News Report today.
Former Southern Poverty Law Center CFO arrested
on fraud charges.
Accused for secretly funneling payments to white supremacist groups.
Former Southern Poverty Law Center CFO,
Heidi B. Rich, what a name,
was arrested in California and hit with fraud charges on Wednesday.
B. Rich oversaw the payments to the informants
and said that KKK and other white supremacist groups
received money from the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Justice Department in April indicted
the Southern Poverty Law Center on 11 counts,
including wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering.
Southern Poverty Law Center was indicted
for secretly funneling more than $3 million in funds
to members of white supremacists and extreme groups, according to DOJ.
A grand jury in the Middle District of Alabama
returned an 11-count indictment against
the Southern Poverty Law Center.
In April, acting Attorney General Blanch said the grand jury
indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center on six counts of wire fraud,
four counts of bank fraud,
and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
On Wednesday, a new indictment
was unsealed charging Heidi B. Rich with fraud.
CNN has reported the former chief financial officer
of the Southern Poverty Law Center
has been arrested in California for her alleged role
in overseeing secret payments to informants
inside of white supremacist groups,
one of whom she was allegedly living with and had
a romantic relationship with at the time.
The woman, Heidi B. Rich, previously ran the Southern Poverty
Law Center's project tracking hate groups in the U.S.
and allegedly oversaw payments of donors' money to people inside
of these hate groups, according to the indictment.
Prosecutors now say she shared
a bank account with one of those sources,
which included funds from the Southern Poverty Law Center's payments.
I believe she was part of the effort to open bank accounts
in completely fictitious company names and make payments
to individuals for reasons that were not accurate as described,
Attorney General Todd Blanch said at a news conference Wednesday,
so they were embezzling donors' money.
Quote, this is exactly what we said would happen in a case like this,
which is that our investigators
and the U.S. attorneys and agents working
the case will keep working it even after any initial indictments.
U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanch confirmed
that Heidi B. Rich has been arrested.
Blanch said that a new indictment was unsealed alleging
B. Rich participated in the scheme to open bank accounts
and make payments to white supremacist groups and embezzle funds.
Ladies and gentlemen, let's listen.
Against the former chief financial officer
of the Southern Poverty Law Center,
can you please speak a little bit about what you've learned
as part of that investigation
and if we should expect more charges?
So, yes, today, my understanding is today there was an arrest made
and there is a new indictment that includes the former CFO of SPLC.
I don't have any comments about whether—we've said
from the beginning, everybody, not just me,
But anybody who's talked about this case,
like virtually every criminal case,
the fact that an indictment is returned doesn't end the investigation.
It's just part of the investigation in most cases,
which is certainly true in this case.
I think as alleged in the indictment,
this individual participated in the scheme.
as alleged. I believe she was part of the effort to open bank accounts
and completely fictitious
companies' names and make payments to individuals
for reasons that were not accurate as described.
But I don't have, I think the indictment
was unsealed this morning. I don't have,
or I believe it was unsealed this morning.
I think the arrest was this morning. I don't have
anything to say beyond that, except to say
that this is exactly what we said would happen in a
case like this which is that um our investigators
and the u.s attorneys and the and the agents work
on the case will can keep on working it even after
the initial indictment it is alleged that she
either made payments to or obtained money to material false
and fraudulent pretenses in the
amount of 4.2 plus million dollars during
her tenure god bless you guys always a democrat
Let's hope they put her under the jail.
