James Kaufman, World News Report today.
Ladies and gentlemen, we were expecting a geomagnetic disturbance
or storm today, and we have one.
Take a look at our estimated planetary Kp index,
a mixture of solar winds and plasma in the planet.
We started the day off with three hours of a geomagnetic disturbance.
Over the last six hours, we've had three hours
of a geomagnetic disturbance
and three hours of a geomagnetic, well, G1 Kp5 storm.
That's where we're at.
The other indexes show similar information
and the college index is elevated,
so it's always a bit different.
By elevated, I mean actually up on a mountain.
This looks like a very short-term
and very light geomagnetic storm.
And disturbance here, you have six hours
There is a disturbance, and there is a G1 geomagnetic storm,
which is about as light as we can get.
So the question is, what caused this?
Well, it could be the coronal hole that was Earth-faced,
and we'll take a look at the solar winds.
Or it could be, actually, this M-flare that was on the outgoing limb,
but we may still have a geomagnetic connection,
or may have had a geomagnetic connection to it at the time.
One, two, it would be awful fast-moving.
well said the coronal hole it was earth facing
but everything will wash out when we take a look at
the satellites we'll be able to determine is it plasma
or is it solar winds so believe it or not
GOES 19 solar ultraviolet imager doesn't do us a wink of good uh
because well we can't see that
coronal hole you can see the remnants of it here there
was earth facing with a small coronal hole
we're placing there and there have been no solar flares
so we're looking at well not much as you
can see this is the last 12 hours
of our star here i'm believing that this slither right here
might be responsible for everything we're seeing here
if not the M class solar flare coming from
One of the outgoing sunspots is responsible.
All right, looking at SDO HMI magnetogram.
We're not going to see that coronal hole.
It just shows the sunspots,
and this is an awful ugly-looking sunspot here.
We should have some more spots coming around the limb soon.
Again, this is awful ugly-looking, and it's been very, very quiet.
On the other hand, we can see that coronal hole
that was earth-facing in the northern hemisphere,
and that slither that disappeared here,
and this is going to be over 24 hours old.
There's no new picture for the 21st.
I didn't want to point that out,
but you can still see what I believe may have caused.
It's either this slither or this outgoing sunspot group.
It's A or B.
Now, how do we tell if it's A or B?
Well, plasma did actually exceed 10 centimeters cubed,
but not very strong and not very hard.
And so the winds did push up from 400 kilometers
per second to maybe 550 kilometers per second.
And you can see temperature pushed up at about that same time.
So I'm guessing this is from the coronal hole.
Although we will take a look at Solar One
to get a little bit better feel for this.
All right, so the one turned into a one-day situation here.
And, well, our shields are in the blue here down in the southern region,
oriented in the south.
And our shields are down everywhere you see purple up on top here,
which is a good part of the day, most all of the day.
So the shields are not very strong right now whatsoever.
However, if we compare that to some spikes in temperature,
let's first see some spikes in density.
In orange, 13.2,
and that's going to be an all-time high for the day.
So, shields are down, density did go to 13.2,
and that is technically a geomagnetic storm,
and it's probably the highest spike we've seen all day.
but when we move into solar winds we went
from 389 kilometers per second up to over 526 kilometers
a second and well the storm is over in this area
which makes little to no sense because we don't
have very strong solar winds here we have a spike
a couple of spikes of almost 500 kilometers per
second nothing extraordinary we have temperatures
that are settling off they were well they were
stronger back here when we saw our plasma
and our solar winds hit right here temperatures went up
and yet this kp index here was at 1.33 all
of a sudden we're seeing a kp index of a geomagnetic
storm here no solar winds and temperature
is well above slightly above normal and no plasma
is due to geomagnetic storm
but i have to blame that slithering crow hole on all this but this
is a hard call here based on this being
the geomagnetic storm three hour period i just can't
find anything that would have looked like something
that would have blossomed in a geomagnetic storm,
I guess 500 kilometers, there's 506 right here,
per second would do it with our shields to the
south and our shields down as well.
So we're going to say that a spike to 506 kilometers per second
right there is what turned this three-hour period
into a G1 geomagnetic storm all right so no well
solar flares today but we do have Venus directly between us
and the sun i'm going to show you all
what that looks like on LASCO very very bright
the morning star right we still have Saturn
Neptune, Iris and Uranus all behind us neptune saturn
and Uranus being gas giants much further
out and they appear here
and we had that geomagnetic connection to Venus now we talked
about the 26th uh being the start of that lineup
and the connection to Mercury happening on the 26th
as well so we talked about the 26th to the 29th being
a time that we're going to have a uptick in
solar and earthquake activity and maybe volcanic activity as well
and we'll take a look at what
it looks like right now.
All right, this is what Venus looks like on LASCO C3,
the morning star coming between Earth and the sun.
It will actually come further in between the two,
and I will definitely send that to you as soon as it occurs,
at some point tonight and tomorrow.
But it is spectacular, to say the very least.
That said, God bless you guys.
I'll be live in about an hour and I hope you'll join me then.
Here we go again. This is epic.
God bless you.
Please share and remember folks that, hey, we're all together in this,
no matter which way it goes.
Again, please share and give us a thumbs up. God bless.
