After a frantic rescue involving local firefighters and a timely vet visit, the couple welcomed the healthy kitten, named Friday Shadow, into their family as a reminder to appreciate life's random blessings.
Welcome back.
New this morning, a run to the grocery store
for birthday cupcakes turns into an emergency
rescue that has turned out to be one
of the best things that happened to a teacher in
Sandy Springs and her husband.
Nicole Matahari and Brandon Liu are now
the proud new owners of an unexpected addition
that reminded them to appreciate life's random blessings.
The day started out like many others.
Nicole Matahari was heading to her school,
North Springs High School, where she teaches
journalism and literature.
Driving to go get the cupcakes, like, I thought I heard a funny sound.
I really hope that the car doesn't have any issues.
Only it did, just not the kind she or her husband,
Brandon Liu, thought.
So we're sitting there at a red light
and the person in the car in the lane next to us
sitting there waving frantically, honking the lane,
like beeping the horn repeatedly.
And so we rolled the window down.
I was like, what's up?
And she's like, you guys have a kitten underneath your car right now.
So he jumped out and searched underneath the car,
but there was no trace of the kitten.
We're all like clenched and like, please don't let there be a bump.
Please don't. Please don't. This is not what we need.
We don't. Please don't let there be a bump. And then there's no bump.
OK, but then.
And we hear.
So we're both like, pull over, pull over right now.
So Brandon jumped out again, just a mile away from Nicole's school.
Then I start just on a whim,
decide to start looking through all the different,
the like the wheel arches and stuff
and the first one that i that i i start looking at i just see
a little tiny puff of black fur clung like clinging
to life around the uh around the
shock absorber and the uh and the coil spring
and we're like cat found him luckily nicole had
already called 9-1-1 and three sandy springs firefighters arrived
on their fiery red chariot
to save the day. Finally, when they pulled him out,
they're like, oh yeah, we got the cat. What
do we do with him? I'm like, you give me the baby.
That's what you do. You give me the baby.
Next, Nicole and Brandon raced to the nearest vet.
And they luckily had a cancellation,
like right as we're walking in,
they had a morning cancellation. So we were able to walk in
and get him seen. And luckily he was healthy and great.
Then they had to find the right name.
The first one was obvious since this happened on a Friday,
but the rest has a deeper meaning.
Shadow because of the color and because, you know, Halloween
and the shadows and especially because he likes to, he just shadows us.
He follows, like, he wants to be in our lap, behind us, everywhere.
Friday's shadow is now a reminder to appreciate every moment,
especially the chaotic ones.
it definitely makes me believe that the universe has uh plans
for everybody and everything and that
you know the right things will happen at the right time uh
if you just keep in you know just keep
you know open ears open eyes open mind what
a sweetheart oh my i love that name too
Nicole was heading to get those cupcakes
for her students it's something that she does monthly
to celebrate their birthdays
and as far as Friday Shadow is concerned the couple still has to fill
out a little bit of paperwork to make sure
that the adoption is uh official also want to give a
shout out to Michael Addison our producer
who put that story together yes for sure love that couple
their energy their their personalities
are just perfect i mean they love that shadow's part of
the family that's a new member
of the family yes exactly coming up in the next half hour
