The Search for Noah’s Ark Might Have Found What the Passengers Were Escaping
There's a house on the floor of the Black Sea, about a hundred metres down, and the man who found the Titanic found it while he was looking for Noah's flood. For two hundred years people have climbed Ararat and dug into a boat-shaped hill in Turkey looking for Noah's Ark. What the searches kept turning up was the water: sea material in the samples from that hill, a flood story nearly four thousand years old with the bodies floating in it, eight feet of clean flood clay under the royal graves of Ur, and a floor of pots left behind in Shuruppak, the city of the Sumerian Noah.
Every one of those floods was real, and every one was too small, too slow or too early to be the whole world. Then two geologists pulled cores from the Black Sea and found the moment a lake turned into a sea. Ballard's robots found the drowned shore and the house. The critics attacked it from every side, until the shells answered: the drowning was abrupt, taking less than forty years. This might be what the passengers were escaping.
