At the moment I'm making a sweater for the pumpkins here
at the PIE Center, obviously on an
August day. I'm Sarah Pappel.
I'm the campus librarian at the Labrador campus of Memorial
University. We have a short growing season.
Pumpkins have thin skin and they get nice and big
and then they stop growing because we get the frost.
So I offered to give a try making some
pumpkin sweaters without ever considering making i knit
but i've never knit a sweater for a
vegetable nor for a purpose of saving
the vegetables life from the frost there are no
pumpkin sweater patterns that i could find
so i've also had to design a pumpkin sweater that
accommodates all the things that i was told
so make sure it can grow so a nice big thick ribbing
and then right up the stem so a nice turtleneck
and then I've added things like buttons you know.
So that should allow the pumpkin to feel comfortable as it grows
but again this is
this is new science we're not sure it's a new frontier.
That's the best part about having
a research farm attached to our campus
is if you think of a research question the farmers will work with you.
