Watch the High Roller III get freed by a tugboat in Bay de Verde
Oct 21, 2026
It was just before 7 o'clock on Tuesday evening
when the fishing vessel High Roller 3 was finally pulled
from the Beta Verde breakwater by the mighty tug Dalton Warrior.
The first attempt failed when the tow line snapped, but the crew
of the tug was a little more patient on the second attempt.
And after pulling for at least four minutes, loud grinding sounds could
be heard as the High Roller slowly released its grip on the rocks.
The stricken vessel, kept afloat with two large airbags on its bow,
was then towed into the Beta Verde Harbor,
where the plan is to carry out temporary repairs
so it can be towed to the shipyard in Harbor Grace.
The successful salvage ended a three-day ordeal.
The five-member crew of the Nova Scotia Registered
High Roller III issued a distress call on Saturday
while fishing for cod in Trinity Bay.
The vessel was being towed into Conception Bay
when the situation worsened and the crew boarded a life raft.
The crew was safely rescued by the Coast Guard, but the High Roller
was forced onto the breakwater by high winds and heavy seas.
The High Roller had 10,000 liters of diesel on board
and 12,000 pounds of cod.
Darkness had settled over the area by the time the High Roller 3
was recovered, so it's not clear if any fuel was spilled.
