New York Rangers trade reports are continuing
to intensify as NHL insider Elliot Friedman has
now just linked them to two new goaltenders on the trade front
and has revealed that Chris Drury
is indeed working the phones despite Dylan Girard's amazing performance
and these trade reports make
absolutely no sense to a large portion of the Rangers fan base.
We're going to break all of
that down including some absolutely absurd
advanced analytics revolving around the defense
core that is blowing people's minds we're going
to break all of that down and of course we got
to talk about Pavel Dorofeev everyone is speaking out about
that we're going to break that all down
and much more guys on this episode of Rangers Digest
but before we get into all of that if
you're new around here make sure to hit
that subscribe button we've noticed that a large
percentage of you guys who watch the videos every single day
are not subscribed to the channel and
I'm doing a jersey giveaway here
on the channel for whatever comes first.
Either the Rangers make the playoffs or 15,000 subscribers.
And thank you so much for 12,000 subscribers
that we just hit over the weekend.
So thank you guys so much for that.
But let's waste no more time.
You saw it in the intro.
There's two goalies linked here to the Rangers now
in a brand new report from Elliot Friedman.
Vemelka from the Utah Mammoth,
which I think is very interesting, by the way,
considering that they have a working relationship,
both of those general managers.
They just made a big trade in the summer for Vincent Trocheck
And that's all the Rangers got
Sean Durzi, Cole Boldwin, right?
So they've talked about it before
I think it's pretty interesting there
And they've also talked, apparently
About Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen from the Buffalo Sabres
And Elliot Friedman, you can see here the quote
I think those are two guys that you looked at
And, you know, both of these guys are very interesting names, right?
You look at Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, great young goaltender
Relatively young, I guess
He's in his mid-20s
From the Buffalo Sabres
he's rocking a 4.75 million dollar contract until the end of 2029
so there is a little bit of term
on that hey it could be you know in theory a good option
when igor comes back you know uh with the
cap going up great backup goaltender option great
young option yeah yeah that makes a lot of sense
that that could make some sense of Vemelka's
a great young goaltender in his own right he's
signed through 2030 as well on basically the same cap hit
so clearly Chris Turi looking at something
in that price range while these guys have
a lot larger of a sample size in the nhl to go off of
while that is true i would like to point all
of your attention to the statistics to the analytics
and i would like to point to you that out
of those two goaltenders if you were to add the rangers
current starting goaltender that they owe
so badly according to some reports according to
Elliot Friedman saying that they're checking in on
goaltenders, that Chris Turi can't help himself.
He's working the phones. If you put
all three of them together, the Rangers
currently have the best goaltender.
The best goalie of
all three of them, currently placed
for the New York Rangers, is currently
on the Rangers, is currently the starting
goaltender between the pipes, putting
on great performance after great performance
including another good one yesterday where
he only let in two goals and both of them
coming in the third period.
it is the rangers goaltender Dylan Gruntout
of all of these options that we've covered
that is actually statistically now that we have
a larger sample size the best goalie in all of
these talks you know we were talking about Stolarz
now we're talking about Vamelka now we're talking
about Lukinin there's other goalies
that i mentioned Jordan Binnington the goalie that
the rangers currently have in net is the best of any of them
and we're still talking about
we are still talking about trades how
is this possible how is this possible Dylan Grant has a
929 save percentage league average isn't even 900 anymore
and he has a 929 is it sustainable
there's actually something i want to get to later
in this video that suggests probably not
however however he is playing well he is playing well
and again that stat we'll get to that the
analytics in a bit because i do want to cover it
because it is a little concerning but there is
actually a reason to believe that that and stay tuned
for that will actually turn around so i
want to get into that but his statistics
are unbelievable this guy's unbelievable and you can
see um you know Elliot Freeman talking about it too it could set
a chain reaction around the league
if they were to make a move for a goaltender
if you're making a move for a goaltender like
vamelka like um you know
who called Pekka Lukinin the goalie that should be going the other way
is Jonas Korpisalo Jonas Korpisalo in this case
if you want to trade for another goalie like this
should not play another i should not play
a game period for the rangers he hasn't played yet he
got hurt in preseason he should not play a single game
for this franchise then he should be the guy
going back to make the money work
that's what maybe maybe that's what we're talking about
right that i could see sure but then even
then you're acquiring guys in these two guys and even
with the Stolarz talk right and some
of the other goalies we've talked about here on the channel
you're acquiring term and big term like a term
is okay if it's he's signed for next year right that
is okay especially if you're giving up Corposalo right
but term in terms of the next three
to four years i mean Igor is here right
do you need i mean i guess you could with the cap going
up to starting goaltenders i guess
that could work Dylan Grand has been phenomenal to start
this season and i see a lot
of people saying sample size sample size sample size he had a 950
last year in three games
and now he's a 929 in seven games like he might actually be good at
this point like if it was two games
and he had a 950 i'd be like man rookie goalie got lucky man
feel good for him that's awesome great storyline he might just actually
be good at this point and
he's putting on genuinely good performances
with a back end that statistically and analytically
hasn't been very good which is crazy
but their team defense is actually quite good and that's
something i want to talk about later in this episode too
so i cannot believe we're still
talking about these trade rumors it's crazy
and you can see the first four games of this season
like he's dipped a little bit right you can see here
on the chart he's dipped a little bit and
by the way the game against
the Devils huge outlier obviously his first four games he's
rocking a .951 save percentage the last three he has
a .903 he's still slightly above league average
goaltending that's fine if you're getting average
or above average from a guy that was in the AHL
last year because you're like
a 12 million essentially million dollar goaltender is hurt
and and out for the year i think you're
in a decent spot if he's able to continue to do this
he had the one bad game
and i said look at and according to digest sports.com it does say that
it is still too early which like you know
my opinion is he might actually just be good all
right but um you know when you're looking
at the one game the bad game i said can he bounce back
from this mentally can he do that and he bounced back
by letting in one goal and almost got a shut
out in an overtime one nothing loss like i don't know how
that i don't know man i don't know how
people still want a goalie if you want to go out
and get a goalie that's fine Jonas Korpisalo has
got to go the other way and you can't give up
that many assets you can't you just can't you
can't give up that many futures don't give up anything
that you know is going to help you in
the future that's currently in hartford right
so i i don't know again last night great performance
from Dylan Grand i i i wish i know a lot of people
are tired about me talking about him he's so good
look at this .935 last night made 29 saves another
good performance they played the Ducks by the way
they're a good young team it's not like they played
a bottom feeder team like they're expected
to make the playoffs in the in the Pacific Division
so um they look pretty good now one
thing that i saw and i want to bring this up
to you guys that suggests that this might not be
sustainable but at the same time i don't know
if these analytics themselves are sustainable
that I saw the other day is that the Rangers pairings
are one of the they're the worst in
the NHL they are top 10 worst all three of them
in the entire National Hockey League and you might
be thinking Darius what are you talking about yes
all three Rangers pairings I saw this yesterday
the highest total for pairings
in the National Hockey League expected goals against Pedersen
and Durzi 6.7 they're second in the NHL Gavrikov
and Fox 5.4 they're seventh and Schneider and
Schmitz are 4.8 they're 10th the Rangers in terms
of highest total expected goals against in the
NHL all three pairings are top 10 in the NHL
that is insane i don't know if that's sustainable
there's no way that's sustainable that's almost shocking
that they're that that they're playing
as well as they are with with that right
and then it goes even deeper if you go expected goals
against per 60 uh Pettersson Durzi seventh Schneider Schmitz 10th
and then Gavrikov and Fox
absent from this top 10 which is good right
so that is absolutely shocking to me when i saw that
so in terms of around
the league expected goals against all three pairings are top 10 and
and then in terms of per 60 Schmitz, Schmitz, Schneider
and Pedersen, Durzi are seventh and
tenth still two pairings in the top 10 that i that was shocking
when i saw that Dylan Grand is playing
very very well their team defense the system
that mike sullivan's playing the fact that they're
actually getting scoring this year um although that did dry up
and i do want to talk about that
a little bit except for last night
when it does dry up it gets pretty ugly um you know that that
is i thought that was insane let me know
if you like let me know how you feel in the comments
about that because i did not realize that through
the first you know little while of the season here
that is absolutely uh wild to me
so uh another thing i want to talk about is uh the metropolitan
race the rangers despite all that despite igor being out look like
an absolute freight train in
this eastern conference this is fantastic to watch last little
while how can you not be excited about
this team right now this morning
or as of last night on october 19th based on the results from
last night the rangers now coming to today coming
to their next game their next couple games toronto
maple leafs on thursday too by the way first place
in the metropolitan division i know they're tied
with carolina but they come into first place
and it it's not like it was like you know something
that they started last and they came up no they've
been like good the whole time they've been good
the whole time now one last thing i want to talk about
because everyone's talking about Pavel Dorof
fab and i really want your thoughts here
in the comments guys i think this is and he has five
points so far this season all right i now think
and he's operating half a point a game which is
not great obviously um i think this is a player
this is where i'm going to stick my flag this is
a player that is snake bitten rather than he's bad
and he's not going to figure it out he is
going to figure it out his line again last night with Ty Cartier
and JT Miller was rocking an 80
expected goals for and an 80 i believe 88 high
danger scoring chances percentage for that if
that continues and they continue to put numbers up
in the 70s right like every single game that
they're playing together now they split them up
for a bit last week then the ranger like the
scoring kind of dipped and and mike sullivan put everything kind
of back together the way it was
at the start of last season obviously
for the last game they look good i didn't even mention
the top lines goal which like Gabe Perreault had five seconds
to tuck that puck in the empty net like
top do not touch the top line top line's awesome second line
though if you look at the advanced
analytics in terms of numbers like that it's
not sustainable that this guy will remain snake bitten
like this his plus minus doesn't look good all
that type stuff he is going to get going i have
faith it is a problem right now you'd like him to get going
but it really isn't a problem because
the team is winning right so as long as the team
was winning everything is okay but when things dry
up it gets ugly because he's not scoring right
so it looks even worse so he's got to get going i'm
not trying to make an excuse for the guy he absolutely has
to get going but if you look at
all the numbers i it has to turn around he has
to start producing at some point and like the
opportunity he missed last night is uh is tough
so you know let me know how you feel about that
he's been super super inconsistent this year
and that's something that i've talked about with
Lafreniere and a lot of rangers right consistency
man you need consistency especially with the fan
base we want to see players be great consistently
and it's hard to do in this league it is but when
you're paid to do it like that when you're paid
to score goals you have to show the results right
we're not going to be looking at at the end
of the season if they miss the playoffs or whatever
like oh they look great
and expected goals for hooray right like it's not going to happen so
he has to start actually producing last thing i will mention here
from NYR Louis, a lot of opinions
on Mike Sullivan are starting to shift, I'm
a big fan, I was talking about it last year of the new
system and the structure that he's brought to this team
because I feel like this team was lacking a
lot of direct north-south skating, uh defensive
structure, especially defensively under Peter
like it was used to always talk about structure
and I'm like, I hey man, I have eyes and I watch
the games, there is no structure here especially defensively, I'm
a big fan of what Mike Sullivan's
done with that, there's a lot to be said about how he lost the room
and how things ended in Pittsburgh
and there was a lot of conversation about that last year
but people like NYR Louis and a lot
of fans are starting to turn the page
on that especially coming to this year because he has
the personnel to put it together now
and not only the personnel, the players themselves, I want to
give credit to the players to have bought
into what Mike Sullivan has put together here and when
that happens it's a beautiful thing
because you have results like this where you wake up this
morning first place in the Metropolitan Division
with a goaltender that was in the AHL last year
and there's so many question marks around the the team
when that injury to Igor happened and you
wake up this morning first place
the team looks like they're bought in, you're firing on a lot of
cylinders and you're, you know, crossing off a lot
of you know things that were question marks this
offseason and Lafrenière looks great, like there's
so much to be happy about, so let me know he's
playing at a 90 point pace right now, by the way, fire me up
that's awesome man, so uh let me know
how you feel about everything we discussed
in the comments below i don't think it makes any sense
for the rangers to make a trade at this point
for a goaltender if you start to see three bad
performances in a row if you start to see two
and he can't really bounce back he's hard on himself
you know the the mental aspect of the game
is starting to catch up with dylan grant let's start
having those conversations and maybe that's not even wise
because that could be considered a panic
move but i don't think there's a reason to panic at all
or even make a trade right now i really
don't and if you do it's corpus allo going the other way
and dylan grant still has to stick
around and maybe you split the games
because right now with those defensive analytics numbers
and the fact that you know dylan grant statistics look
the way it does why would you panic and make
a trade. Let me know how you feel in the comments below.
And I do think Dorfia is going to pick
it up at some point.
