Things are Picking Up FAST...| Carolina Hurricanes News and Update
Oct 21, 2026
There is a new wild deadline in sports,
and it's in the NHL, and it's on Friday.
That is when a major player in the league has to report to his team,
or else, will he
get moved before his suspension is up on Friday,
or will he have to go back to the
team who he he is contracted to this season
and after that welcome to Hurricanes Digest
I'm Jeff Testinero I invite you all
to like share comment subscribe click that notification button
when you do subscribe so you know
when a video like this is coming at you uh we're very close
to 3,000 let's keep those subscribers going get
that number up 3,000 is the goal so let's do it
Caniacs it is amazing that this story just won't
die I know he's Connor Hellebuck I know this is
a big deal I get it but there have been no I mean I'm just I'm
not I'm just saying from what I see
through the lens of the Winnipeg Jets there have
been no substantial offers into Winnipeg for
Connor Hellebuyck this whole time that he's been forced to sit out
and then get suspended do i
think he should have sat out probably
not i mean Larkin showed up to Detroit and look what happened
to him but something has to give
and it's gotta happen by Friday Friday is the goal NBA Charlotte
Hornets had their D-day today with Brandon Miller now the NHL
and Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg
Jets have theirs i'm not sure whose side to take
but it is what it is Elliotte Friedman reports
that Connor Hellebuyck suspension ends Friday
for Carolina that creates a situation worth monitoring
if the Hurricanes acquire him
by the weekend would they immediately face another decision
what happens to Brandon Bussey
and Pyotr Kochetkov the important distinction is that Friday
is a reported return date not a date trade deadline
but he has to return to Winnipeg
or somewhere uh Friedman says Hellebuck informed Winnipeg
on October 2nd that he intended to return
his suspension ending would allow him to rejoin
the Jets i don't think he should go back in that
building i don't care who he is first
of all he robbed Canada of a gold honestly robbed but he
helped team USA beat Canada in the gold medal
and now he wants to go back there i don't know
i don't know um but his suspension is up Friday it does
not establish that a Carolina trade
is close because we're not sure what's going down
um digest cap model puts Carolina's headroom at
around 10.2 million adding Hellebuck's 8.5
million hit leaves roughly 1.7 million before
outgoing salary that illustrates the financial
possibility the complete transaction um you know
the complete transaction and current roster
would determine um actual compliance that would
determine actual compliance
and my except my expectation is that Carolina would acquire
Hellebuck to be its primary starter i don't like that idea
but you're not gonna have him be your
backup that would change both incumbents opportunities
his most recent completed
season produced an 895 save percentage
and a 2.86 goals against average Carolina would need
confidence that his present ability
and readiness alongside his established career record would stay
intact the follow-up plan needs three parts assess
his readiness choose the long-term tandem
and resolve the third goalie role we know right now
that Caden Primo of the AHL Wolves would
probably be the number three option
but we got one two tandem with with Bussy and and Piotr
the financial argument for keeping Bussy
is pretty straightforward if you want to talk money his cap
hit is 1.9 million through 28 29 paired
with Hellebuck that would mean 10.4 million annually
in goaltending assuming no salary would
be retained i don't think they're going to want
to keep his salary in Winnipeg
the performance assessment requires more care all right so we
have the digest numbers has Bussy
at an 882 save percentage through five appearances this season
that's a small sample his 31 wins last season are relevant
but wins also reflect reflect
Carolina's support and his playoff experience remains limited
and I'm sorry but currently he's
0-2 this season. Keeping Bussy would preserve
an affordable goalie familiar with Carolina's
environment. The question is whether
the coaches trust him to provide dependable starts behind
Connor Hellebuck. The Canes goaltending coach
put it very very you know Schoenfelder put it
very simply. Consistency is what we're looking for.
That is the appropriate standard. The Canes
need repeatable performance when its second goalie is playing,
especially if Hellebuck requires
a gradual return. He hasn't touched the ice in a very long time.
I'm sure he's skated, but
under this routine,
Carolina keeps Hellebuck and Bussy and seeks trade value for Kochetkov.
This could return a separate transaction.
We should not assume Winnipeg wants Kochetkov as part of its return,
but they would be pretty stupid not to.
I would judge Bussy on the quality of his performance
and the role Carolina needs filled,
rather than allowing last season's win total to settle such a decision
on whether they trade Kochetkov or Bussy.
Kochetkov has a legitimate argument, though.
Digest lists him at five wins
and five starts through a .912 save percentage grading all five
as quality starts that's encouraging evidence
although you know you know although five games
can't really establish his long-term level
but anybody who's watching this stuff i know you are
i am Kochakov looks good in the net
but Bussey's 0 and 2 including one to Calgary just saying um
His cost, his cost $2 million this season,
rising to $3.95 million for each of the following two seasons.
A Hellebuyck-Kochakov tandem would therefore cost $10.5 million now
and $12.45 million next season without any retention by Winnipeg.
The case for paying that difference is having another goalie capable
of handling meaningful responsibility.
carolina would need to decide how much it values
that protection early you know his early numbers
deserve weight but the evaluation
also needs to be a broader performance history and health
a strong opening stretch should inform
the decision without totally controlling it he had
surgery he got things fixed maybe he's good
keeping Kochakov means accepting the higher
future tandem costs and finding a trade return
for Brandon Bussey the comparison should include
what each outgoing goalie could bring back in return it
also requires a credible workload plan
keeping two goalies
with sustainable responsibilities only works if both receive
enough preparation
and playing time carolina currently has two established roster places
occupied by Bussey and Piotr adding Hellebuyck would create
a third claim on those opportunities
the schedule would help determine
the transition Carolina could use practices and available starts
as you know asked to assess readiness before finalizing
the tandem provide roster space
and cap compliance you know if it allows it can't send one of the NHL
though i'll tell you that
i would avoid assuming Hellebuck could arrive immediately
and carry a full starter workload
the team would need to assess his conditioning timing
and his health um you know carrying three
briefly could provide depth during the assessment it
also consumes a roster place and divides
practice opportunities both incumbents require
a waiver for an ordinary AHL assignment so sending
one down risk losing him to another team and i'm sorry
but neither one of these guys are AHL goalies
they're both NHL goalies and if you put Piotr
or Brandon on waivers they are going bye bye my
conditional preference would be Hellebuck um maybe for for Bussy
and his patrol honestly i don't want
Hellebuck at all um you know it could be back
and forth it could be you know whatever you know cost
control what we get you know it's it's fun
to talk what what we would get and possibly but this
is my opinion coming at you through the computer
or phone screen or however you're watching me
right now i don't want Connor Hellebuck i don't want him leave
the send send him to let LA have
him the rangers aren't gonna get aren't gonna get him
and if they do who are they getting you know
by goalie age standards he's pretty over
the hill he hasn't touched the ice at all with a team he's
probably skated but who knows i'm sure he has
but i don't want Connor Hellebuyck, i want to keep it the
way things are Piotr right now if i'm picking if i'm Rod
and i'm picking a starter Kochetkov is my
starter Bussi's my backup just based on Kochetkov's five solid starts
and Bussi's not bad they weren't
terrible last night in Calgary wasn't terrible
but he's owned too so let it build let it mature
let it marinate i don't want Connor Hellebuyck
but friday is the day he has to come back he said he's
coming back or he has to come back
or something i don't know but friday is the day if they're
going to trade him they're going to trade him now
so if anything else comes down i'll be the
first to let you know until
then for Hurricanes Digest i'm Jeff Testanero let's go Canes don't
bring Connor Hellebuyck to Raleigh.
