A therapist asked Eckhart why God allows this much suffering | Eckhart Tolle

Oprah ends her interviews with the same question. What do you know for sure? Eckhart Tolle says there is, ultimately, only one honest answer. The one thing you can know for sure is that you are conscious, right now. Everything else is belief, memory, or inference. That is not. Then he points out something about the answer itself. Becoming conscious that you are conscious stops the mind. It has to. When you are thinking, you are conscious of something, a thought, a thing, a story. You cannot at the same time be conscious of consciousness. So the moment you notice it, the thinking pauses, and what is left is awareness aware of itself. He says that is a linguistic trick, the subject and the object, and that there is really only one thing there: consciousness has become conscious of itself. That, he says, is awakening. His suggestion is small. Find out whether you can be, right here, in thoughtless awareness, simply aware of your own presence. Become comfortable with the stillness that follows. And then, he says, you begin to love it. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇

A therapist stands up with a question she has been carrying out of her sessions. Earlier in the week Eckhart Tolle told a story about a man who finishes dinner and goes looking for the chef. She has questions for the chef. Why did you make this? Why does one person get a gourmet plate and another a rotten one? She admits, if she is honest, to some resentment. Eckhart's first answer is that the question is justified, and so is the resentment. Then he lays out where the argument usually goes. If there were a God, he could not allow this. If I were God, I would not allow this, which makes me morally superior to any God, which means there is no God. Or there is a God and he is malevolent. In the early Christian centuries the Gnostics took that route and concluded that the world was made by a lesser, flawed creator. Others blamed a devil. Others concluded the universe is random. He thinks none of these are correct, and that they all share one starting point: the assumption that God is a controlling figure somewhere who makes things happen or allows things he could prevent. Either he uses that power to torture people or he declines to use it, and neither is a God anyone would want. The traditional argument against God, he says, is an argument against that figure. And that figure, in his view, was a misconception of what the word means in the first place. If you work with suffering, or are living with it, please have somewhere to put it down. This is a talk about a question, not a substitute for support. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇
