This is why life tests you all the time | Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle tells the room that the world is here to challenge them. Then he adds: you thought it was here to make you happy? It's not working, is it? It can't. He turns to one of his favourite parables. A man builds a house on sand, and when the storms come it is swept away. Another man digs first, deep, until he reaches rock, and builds there, and when the same storms come, the house stands. The house is you. The rock is the dimension of being underneath the person, and the digging is what the spiritual life actually consists of. Because the storms do come, to everyone. A challenge arrives, it passes, there is a quiet stretch, and then another one from behind. If you are not rooted, life is sorrow, which is what the Buddha said in his own way. If you are, the world loses its power to make you unhappy. Not because you have cut yourself off. He is careful about that. You still feel. You lose something valuable and it is a pity. Someone you love dies and the tears come, and when it is a parent, or a child, it is harder still. But underneath the sadness, when there is a foundation, there remains a peace, and you are no longer totally devastated. He describes that deeper dimension as something that, if it could speak, would say all is well. He closes with a story about an ancient Greek philosopher who, told of his son's death, is supposed to have said he knew the boy was mortal. Eckhart is unsure what was in that man. Perhaps he had gone deep, perhaps he had cut himself off and mistaken it for realisation. A better answer, he suggests, would have been the opposite: I know he is immortal.
