Why does God allow suffering? Eckhart answers a therapist

A young man tells Eckhart Tolle he has two very strong desires. To be a famous musician, and to be with someone. He quit his job to go after both, got a taste of each, and lost almost everything in the process. What should he do next? Eckhart begins with an old saying, Oscar Wilde's, that applies to anyone not yet rooted in being. There are two ways to be unhappy. One is not getting what you want. The other is getting it. And perhaps, he suggests, the young man has had a taste of both already. Then he turns practical. It is perfectly fine to pursue goals. But he asks the question nobody asks a dreamer: are you good at it? You probably will not become famous if you are not, or if you do not enjoy it. And that is the real test. Do you enjoy the doing? Because if the attention is on the goal of being famous, it is not on the music, and the music is what the fame was supposed to be about. Having goals is good, he says. Excessive attachment to a goal is an energy leak. It drains the quality of whatever you are doing in the present moment, which is the only place the goal can ever actually be reached. So the balance is this: keep the goal, lose the grip, and put the energy back into the thing itself. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇
