Why the conditioned mind feels like being awake | Eckhart Tolle

Without challenges, Eckhart Tolle says, you become more unconscious. You go to sleep. It is the reverse of what most people are working toward. A comfortable life is the goal, and he suggests the comfortable life is the sedative. Adversity, he says, is the great awakener. It drives the evolution of consciousness, not just in humans, but in any life form anywhere, because without encountering difficulty nothing wakes up. As Carl Jung put it, there is no coming to consciousness without pain. He is careful with the order of events. First, adversity generates suffering, in most cases. Then there is a potential, not a certainty, that it generates more consciousness. That potential depends on something he spends the first part of the talk pointing at: the presence underneath the historical person, which some traditions call the I am. Most people are not yet in touch with it. They are in the grip of a conditioned mind, which he describes as a kind of hypnosis, and it is adversity, more than anything else, that breaks the trance. So the question is not how to avoid being challenged. It is what the challenge finds when it arrives. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇
