Back to our breaking news tonight.
The fast-moving Norte fire driven by relentless Santa Ana winds
has burned across hundreds
of acres near San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano,
destroying several multi-million dollar homes.
Mandatory evacuation orders remain in place.
No civilian injuries, though, have been reported,
though two firefighters were treated
for heat-related issues. Fox 11's Christy Fajardo,
live now in San Juan Capistrano with the latest
from there. Christy?
Yeah, Glenn, we have just gotten an update from the Orange County Fire
Authority, who now tells us
that the Norte Fire has now burned 570 acres. And they also tell us,
in addition to the homes that you see here behind me
that were either damaged or destroyed,
there were also homes that were damaged
or destroyed on Calle Miramar and Avenida Pescador
We're actually on Via in San Juan Capistrano.
And take a look there behind me.
You'll notice that firefighters are dousing that area with water.
And that's because a short while ago there was a flare-up.
And there was pretty significant flames right where
that water is now hitting.
And they've managed to knock it down.
But that is why firefighters will be out here
for several days doing mop-up work
and trying to keep the fire from reigniting.
and you'll notice that the wind is now blowing
in our direction you can see some of the smoke and
even some of the water that was coming our direction
so it is actually blowing towards
homes that have yet to burn
in all OC Fire Authority tells us that six homes were either
destroyed or damaged including some on this street where we are now
and there are firefighters up and
down the street and they will be here we're told for several days even
so the again the new acreage
is 570 acres at 6:30
when there was a press conference the fire chief told us that the
acreage was 465 and he said at that time too
that they were hoping to keep it at the current
configuration meaning the same footprint
that they had hoped to contain the fire and not see
any spread keep it to the same area where it had already burned
or was currently burning but it
appears that it has spread another 110 acres
or so because again the new acreage is 570 acres and
you did mention the two firefighters
were injured we did ask the fire chief and the incident
commander about those injuries they didn't want to elaborate
or specify but said that they were
significant but also added that the firefighters
were getting incredibly good treatment and were
being treated well.
Now back out here live, the fire actually started in nearby San Clemente
and about 11:30 this morning
and then quickly spread here into San Juan Capistrano and
they had a very robust response.
They knew that the Santa Anas were coming and so they had already
activated mutual aid. There were firefighters here
from Riverside County from LA County and
elsewhere and they were feeling pretty good
as I said around 6:30 that they would be able to
contain it keep it at the current footprint as the fire chief put it.
Live in San Juan
Capistrano, Christy Fajardo, sending it back to you.
All right Christy, thank you for the update.
