Helping news to get you out of Oregon.
We're learning more about a deadly shooting at an elementary school.
Heartbreaking three children
and a teacher are dead after authorities say a teenager
stormed into the school and opened fire yesterday afternoon.
The suspected shooter is also dead.
We have Amalia Roy live now with the latest.
Amalia.
Hi, Bob, Jen, the communities in mourning.
Last night, there was a vigil for the children
that were attacked at the school.
and today there is yellow police tape that is still outside
and we're just hundreds away from
it right now. What we do know are the ages of the children
who were killed five, eight and 11 years
old. We don't know the age of the teacher who was killed yet.
But there's also two people still in
the hospital, a seven year old
and a 54 year old with critical injuries. No community should have
to do what we're doing right now.
I don't have any words for what this community is feeling right now
and I don't think anyone does. We are heartbroken.
We are horrified. This is the kind of thing you
hear about in other places and pray that it never happens here.
And it has happened here.
Police say the first 911 call came around 1
o'clock Thursday from someone outside
Silver Rail Elementary School saying someone
with a long gun was shooting at them.
More calls followed from inside the school
and police arrived minutes later.
There they found the suspect, a 16-year-old Bend resident dead inside.
They say the attacker
shot at the locked doors to get into the building.
Police then say a bystander saw
the suspect go into the school, followed him,
then shot and killed him shortly before authorities
arrived. Yesterday, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek thanked
the Good Samaritan who stopped the attack.
And to the community member
who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life,
your actions carry a heavy emotional burden
and I just want you to know that my thoughts
are with you as well. We don't know yet the
connection, if any, that the attacker had with the school.
Federal authorities are telling Fox
that the shooter used a shotgun, Bob, Jen.
There are reports that that shotgun may have been his mother's shotgun.
Are you hearing that?
And we know nothing more about this young shooter
and why the motive, why this shooter
might have walked into that school.
I have seen those reports, nothing that I've seen directly from Fox.
But yes, I've seen those, local authorities
are not saying much more about the attacker's
background at this time, but we are expecting more updates to come.
Do we know, Amalia, if the teacher and the three children,
were they all in one classroom?
That's something I'm not sure
with the information we have right now, but we are looking to get
more.
And what about how long it took
for the other person to engage this teenager as he
was walking through the school
because we were also hearing reports of parents or teachers
that were in the school saying that they had seen
the gunman as he was coming to the school.
And so they were just terrified, what are you hearing?
So we know that there were multiple 911 calls
and police are saying that they arrived
within minutes from those calls happening.
But that timeline between when the bystander saw and went in,
that is something that we
don't have yet.
Thank goodness for that bystander.
