Two others remain in critical condition as the community mourns this horrific tragedy.
You know, we're going to talk now about this Oregon mass shooting,
you know, never an easy
thing to talk about. And it's just heartbreaking.
So I'm sure by now you've heard about what
happened in Oregon last night, a mass shooting at an elementary school.
We have three children
and a teacher are dead after authorities say
that a 16-year-old went into the school and
began shooting. We know that a bystander opened fire
and killed the shooter, but just a devastating,
devastating thing that happened there.
So we're going to take you now live to Oregon. We have
our Amalia Rory. She is going to give us
an update about what's happening there. Amalia,
what can you tell us? Hi, Olivia.
As the morning goes on, I'm seeing more parents coming with their
kids and leaving flowers, balloons at the site here at the school.
I actually saw some parents
earlier talking about how not knowing
when they could get their kids things from their classrooms.
So you have this community in mourning.
Last night, there was a vigil where hundreds of people
came. They prayed together and reflected on the attack that happened.
We do know the ages of the
three children who were killed, five, eight, and 11.
And there's a teacher whose age we don't know
yet. But there's still two people,
a seven-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher in critical condition at
the hospital. No community should have
to do what we're doing right now. I don't have any words for
what this community is feeling right now and I don't think anyone does.
We are heartbroken.
We are horrified. This is the kind of thing you hear about
in other places and pray that it never
happens here and it has happened here.
A call came around one o'clock Thursday from someone
outside Silver Rail Elementary School saying someone
with a long gun was shooting at them.
More calls followed from inside the school.
Police arrived minutes later.
And they found a suspect,
a 16-year-old Bend resident, dead inside the school.
They say the attacker shot at the locked
doors to get into the building.
Then a bystander saw the suspect going into the school, followed him,
then shot and killed him shortly before authorities came.
Yesterday, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek thanked
the Good Samaritan who stopped the attack.
and to the community member
who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life
your actions carry a heavy emotional burden
and i just want you to know that my thoughts are with
you as well we don't know yet what the connection
was between the shooter and the school but there
are updates we are getting later today
at 2 p.m local time olivia thank you so much for that
update it's just so tragic
and you know horrible to to be talking about this again another school
shooting. What can you tell us about just the overall,
I guess, emotion in that community
there? You're on the ground. We're not.
So kind of take us there and tell us just about how people
are feeling. I mean, I imagine just heartbroken and devastated.
It's sad to see. You see parents
coming through with these long looks on their faces,
going with their children. But it's unclear
how much their kids actually really understand what's going on.
They're coming with their
flowers. Now, there's no school today across
the entire school district. So you're also seeing
parents walking by with their kids and a skateboard
and toys and going to the park so it's this mix of
you're seeing more community together
but you see you see the weight that these parents are carrying
yeah i mean it's just it's devastating um thank you
for for that update certainly our thoughts
and prayers are with that community um during
this absolutely horrific time amalia roy live
in oregon for us thank you so much
