And welcome into the DMV zone on this Friday as we get you ready for your weekend.
We got a lot to talk about today,
but as we head into this weekend, big story here is the weather.
It has been a roller coaster of temperatures and views.
We started rain with the day,
and may ended with rain yet again. As we give you this.
Over Bloomfield, Virginia, the leaves already turning there.
Some people getting that weekend started early. Must be nice.
Caitlin Roth is here with a look at your weekend forecast,
and the temperatures right now they're incredibly comfortable out there.
Even though we started with a really dreary day.
Yeah, the sun broke out, Marina, and all of a sudden we've turned it around.
Nice afternoon. It's warm again. So October 16th and summer continues to show up.
I am wondering when that will ever end. Hopeful by next week, but one never knows.
So as we take a look at satellite radar, big clearing window over DC.
Clear skies that stretch up along 95 as well as down to the south.
But you look off to the west, and there's plenty of clouds and showers, and that's
our cold front showing up with several bands of rain and even some thunderstorms.
So all of this sunshine, all of this warm weather, going to actually lead
to some thunderstorms that will be tracking later on this evening.
Again, very summer-like.
So we're going to throw in the thunderstorms for a good measure.
Getting in closer on storm tracker radar,
these storms have barely entered the picture of our viewing area.
They're still mostly over the mountains.
Maybe extreme western Garrett County is seeing a couple downpours. So we'll have
to wait and watch and see how long it takes them to propagate eastward.
It's three o'clock. They're only just kind of entering the mountains,
and if nothing really forms out ahead of it, it's going to be several hours.
And of course, everything was dependent upon us clearing today.
It took a while. We didn't really until about noon.
We'll see if that was enough to still fuel some strong storms.
The National Weather Service thinks so.
So we are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m. Been a while since we've
been under one of those. Clear skies abound as we take
a live look outside on this beautiful and warm looking Friday.
It's been a crazy week and really a crazy fall. I mean, more bad days than good.
So I'm hoping to turn this around and have some better days out there.
Right now, that beautiful 78 degrees. Well on our way to hitting 80.
You know, we hit 92 days ago. Pretty sure that's our last 90 degree day.
Maybe this is our last 81, but I also wouldn't bet on it.
So here's temperatures to the west where they see more sunshine.
Well into the 80s. 87 in Martinsburg. 84 in Winchester. 82 in Culpeper.
And mid to upper 70s are hanging on across the Chesapeake.
Dew points are well into the 60s. We do have some uncharacteristic moisture,
especially to the south with those dew points 70 plus.
That will definitely help add to the rain and the possible thunderstorms later.
So the model still wants to bring in a gusty line of showers
and storms right up between six and seven p.m. Lined up there along 95.
That looks like a summertime squall line. And in fact,
that's why DC up through Philadelphia is highlighted for the risk of severe weather.
It pushes off to the east quickly initially, and out of the metro.
However, that front gets stuck.
And notice how rain will kind of just sit off to our east through the evening hours.
Likely, we'll lose that severe threat quickly,
but the model showing the potential for some decent rainfall overnight
with this thing getting stuck and still plenty of moisture around.
We could be waking up to a pretty wet Saturday morning.
I don't want to write Saturday off completely.
By midday, you see that clearing line from west to east.
I would say if you're in Annapolis, Salisbury, Ocean City,
you're going to be waiting until later on in the day.
You know, the farther east you go, the later it's going to take to clear,
and the beaches it just might not be a good day at all. But
I think eventually everyone will clear out into what will
be a nice Sunday with some sunshine and clear skies.
So we will finally get the sunshine back second half of Saturday and then Sunday.
So this will actually not be a rain-free weekend, even though it looks like it
was going to be thanks to that front getting hung up tonight into tomorrow morning.
Quite a streak we have going. Regardless, as we clear, the winds pick up.
It's a very cool and breezy feeling weekend, unlike the past couple of days
because it was hot Wednesday. It was chilly yesterday.
It was kind of that wet, cool feeling, and it was warm today.
So this is a real brisk, dry, cool air mass, very, very fall-like,
and what you would expect by this point in October.
Fifty-seven is it for that high temperature on Saturday?
Fifty-nine on Sunday with beautiful sunshine, less wind,
beautiful afternoon to be a pumpkin patch or leaf peeping because here we are,
mid-October, low to moderate color here.
You could see as you get out into western Loudoun and Fairfax Brewery,
they were definitely seeing some more color,
and so our higher elevations to the north and west are getting closer.
Still, probably a couple weeks to go as they peak in late no in late October.
It's the first week of November for the rest of us.
So let's jump ahead to that seven-day forecast.
So cool weekend and into next week, things actually look kind of normal for once,
meaning dry and quiet, no big storms, seasonal temperatures in the 60s.
So after a lot of back and forth and up and down,
Marina, we could settle into some more stable weather.
It's been too moody as of late. Yeah, and it's going to be I think
with the temperatures we've had this week a cold weekend.
Yeah, though we definitely take that in January, but for October, maybe not.
Will and probably some frost and freeze headlines outside the Beltway Sunday
and Monday morning. So tis the season. Tis the season.
Thank you so much, Caitlin. We'll see you back at four o'clock.
At Fox Five News, at this hour, White House Press Secretary Katie Zakiria,
hour after just five days on the job,
she's been blasted for poor performance in her first press briefing on Tuesday.
President Trump saying today at the White House that she'd been treated unfairly,
but added that maybe she should reconsider the job. Another one shortly after that.
The New York Times another hour reported that Zakiria had been fired.
Fox Five Caitlin Norwood, who travels with the White House press corps,
joining us here. Five days.
Now officially the shortest tenured press secretary for the Trump administration.
Here, what we make of what just happened? Yeah, I mean setting a new record here.
We know Anthony Scirrinochi. He lasted eleven days.
She lasted less than a week here. But I was talking to sources in the White House.
They are confirming that she is transitioning out of this role.
Now we do know this comes again on the heels of that press briefing.
It was a shaky press briefing. It was a short briefing, and that combination on top
of the questions and scrutiny that come over whether or not she is in the running.
That was a question that came when the president was about to enter the first one,
or Porter asking her about where did she pass the bar.
She said when she was in China,
and just the questions that have come just in one week of being press secretary.
The focus is not right now on the White House or what the president is doing.
The focus is on who is the face of the press,
and this is the run up right to the midterms.
And there's been questions right now about chief of staff Suzy Wiles.
What's going on with her with the president at the same time?
Doesn't seem like there was a big vetting process.
Yeah, even that chief of staff was involved with.
She was talking to Zakiria, who appeared on Fox News and seemed to be of the liking
or in the vein of what the president wanted to see at the podium,
but didn't really execute to expectations. Yeah, President Trump was very clear even
when he was on the campaign trail before of being elected again that he
was looking for loyalty, and maybe she passed the loyalty test.
But there is a lot that goes into being press secretary.
A lot of preparation. You need to be well media trained,
having been in the room with dozens of press briefings for the Biden administration.
You know the the lights are very bright, and there's a lot of pressure
and a lot of questions. Yeah. Feeling from dozens of reporters.
And this first press briefing was supposedly from friendly outlets,
conservative outlets. Anthony Scirrinochi in the last eleven minutes here,
tweeting dear Katie Zakiria, speaking as a world leading expert
on the short White House tenure, turn off the news and go enjoy your family,
and time you realize that the universe did you a major favor.
So he too tuning in there and having a comment on that.
Yeah, and I'm sure he did, but I'm right having been the job.
And President Trump was saying publicly that this is not a job that she has to do,
and therefore kind of giving her that out.
Yeah, she's got four kids out from California,
kind of restructuring her life to take on the job.
But we'll see if there's a new press secretary of what happens next.
Caitlin Norwood, keep us posted.
Yeah, we'll see you throughout the later shows here on Fox Five.
All right. In the meantime,
my investigation continues into the deadly shooting at Oregon Elementary School.
Investigators say a 16 year old gunman from Bend, Oregon,
killed three children and a teacher at a rural elementary school yesterday.
A bystander who was a father of two children at the school shot the suspect.
More expected to come out during a press briefing coming up in a couple of hours.
Let's check in with Ken Gray, former FBI agent, and what we know at this hour.
Another mass shooting, another school shooting.
This time though, the response not from police, but a bystander.
Give us more on the full picture here, Ken.
Hi, Maraina. Sure. So the the shooter, sixteen-year-old John Griffin II,
entered into the school, but first shot at a car, then went over to the school,
shot his way in by shooting the lock on the door and entered the school.
A person driving by who has kids at that school,
but was driving home to go to lunch,
saw him entering into the school and decided to follow him and to stop him.
So he got out of his vehicle, went over and shot and killed John Griffin II.
The the hero in this case has been identified as Caleb Gianmanco,
and he does not consider himself a hero because he didn't get there
in time to save all the kids, but he did save a lot more because had had
the shooter continue on unabated, he would have killed a lot more kids.
Unbelievable that somebody, a bystander, would be the one to take down the shooter.
And I'm sure that there will be questions to come out of this.
I know that there's reporting here about the shooter, the 16-year-old.
Where this shotgun that he had was purchased seemed to have been by his mother.
Here, what do we know about the investigation? Motive? Is there a former student?
What's the background here? What have we gleaned so far?
So so far they have not connected him with Silver Rail Elementary School.
So we don't know what the motive is, why he picked,
why he selected this particular school. His mother was the purchaser of that weapon,
and she purchased it around his birthday.
So this may have been a birthday present for him. It was a pump action shotgun.
I don't know how many rounds he was carrying with him, but you know,
at least we know he killed the four people and injured two others.
So three kids, five, eight, and eleven, and a teacher was killed, and then a teacher
and a child was also shot, who are both in critical condition in the hospital.
I know this man who was able to take down the shooter does not want to be called
a hero, but had it not been for him, this could have been an even greater tragedy,
a more so than it already is. Ken, there are going to be questions now about how
a second person who was unauthorized, at least in the building,
to carry a gun, got into etc. As you know where I'm going here,
what is the probe now as to this hero who saved so many?
I imagine there will be a probe as well.
I'm sure there will be after all.
This is Oregon and they have a very very strict gun laws.
But he was driving by as opposed to be sitting there on the ground,
so that may be exculpating circumstances that will avoid this whole problem.
Definitely a hero in this particular case,
but you know this this is a horrible situation. I think that the mother
who purchased the shotgun, she is likely to be charged with it.
And there had been previous school shooter cases where
the parents were charged after the fact with manslaughter.
So she may be facing up to manslaughter in this particular case.
Yeah, I mean at some point there's got to be accountability across the board.
This cannot continue to happen.
And to your point, we have seen parents, especially in recent time here,
being prosecuted for the crimes committed by their children,
if there was any involvement, including the purchasing of a gun.
Is it legal to purchase a gun for a 16 year old in Oregon?
I I don't have the answer to that question. I don't know.
Yeah, I know that some states vary at their age,
especially for long guns, when in fact they could be purchased.
Ken, thank you so much for the breakdown as that investigation continues
and a community there in Bend, Oregon is certainly grieving tonight.
We appreciate it. Straight ahead, election day is almost here.
We've got your guide to casting a ballot.
We'll tell you where and what the ballot says on the other side of this break.
