A community in mourning after a shooting
in an elementary school in Bend that left three
students and a teacher dead.
And reporter Leah Kamana joins us now live in Bend. Tell us more.
It's a profound sense of loss.
That is what several people in this community have told us
they are feeling in addition to grief, heartbreak, shock.
There's also some anger and some fear.
We are live across the street
from Silver Rail Elementary School where that horrific
shooting happened.
You can see this morning caution tape all around the school
and still a strong police
presence.
That's going to continue for the next few days
as the investigation continues.
Meanwhile, the community trying to process,
trying to heal hundreds gathered at Drake
Park for a vigil last night, holding candles,
singing, praying, laying flowers.
members tell us despite the tremendous loss,
the gathering provided some hope,
showing them just how strong this community is.
There is a lot of support and a lot of love and
a lot of cohesion in our community.
So I'm really proud of the folks that came out tonight.
Marzal says he rushed home to hug
his two kids after learning about the shooting.
Kristen Marshall did similarly.
She has three sons at three different schools in the Bend
School District, and she says she's terrified to send them back.
But two friends who happen
to be teachers had this message
for her and other parents i'm terrified to send them back
it's just it's so sad that these little people that just want to learn
and laugh and play and you know that they can't
do that freely it's really sad i'm devastated
that our happy place is not happy
but we will make it happy for them i promise i can't imagine
not being there for our kids right now.
And making sure that we do everything we
can to make them feel safe when they're at school.
So one of those things community
members have told us you hear about in other places,
you never think it's going to happen
in your own backyard. So again, people here are starting to heal.
There is a growing memorial at
Drake Park where that vigil was held last night.
There is also a memorial that has started here
at the school as well. Flowers have been laid at the front sign.
The school district, Bend
LaPine School District,
is closed today and all school events have been canceled. Reporting
live in Bend, I'm Leah Kamana. I'll send it back to you in studio.
