We are at B.J. Brown Park here in the hollow section
of Bridgeport where police say a man was struck over
the head with a rock that was not much bigger than this one.
But police now say that man was not homeless after all.
But it is important to remember he was found
on the ground here at the park and detectives believe he
was sleeping at the time he was attacked, which led them
to believe initially that he may have been a homeless individual.
When the rock attack occurred on Wednesday morning...
Detective Jeff Holtz says the attack occurred Wednesday beneath
this covered bike rack here at the back end of the park.
He says the victim's family has now identified him
as a 22-year-old Bridgeport man who does have a home.
The focus now, who walked up to the victim
and smashed the rock on his head.
The park itself, named after 8-year-old B.J. Brown, who,
along with his mom, was murdered execution style in their own home.
Mayor Joe Gannon, meantime, says whether a person has a home or not,
what everybody does have is the right
to live free of the threat of brutal violence.
Abusing, hurting, and in this case, almost trying to kill someone,
will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted here in Bridgeport.
And as police pour over surveillance video,
they're asking anybody who can help
to call their confidential tip line.
We have that for you at News12.com.
In Bridgeport, Frank Recchia, News 12.
