The incident has sparked a broader call for unity among Indian American, Muslim, and Jewish leaders to combat the rise of anti-South Asian hate and white supremacist violence.
Community leaders are rallying after police stopped
a mass shooting from taking place at a Hindu temple.
Joni Lama is with me now to talk more about the growing call,
really, for unity to stop hate, Joni.
People have to say something now after all of this.
The Council on American Islamic Relations knows the civil rights battle
and hosted Indian American, Muslim, and Jewish leaders
to stand together to denounce the potential violence.
They say anti-South Asian hate is on the rise.
19-year-old Alexandros Paparakis was arrested Sunday.
His home was searched, and police found a rifle, hundreds
of rounds of ammunition, a gas can, and Nazi imagery in his room.
He allegedly told co-workers he had something planned for the largest,
oldest Hindu temple in Aurora.
Sunday was the beginning of a religious festival.
Thousands were in attendance.
Police say he could not carry out the shooting because his gun jammed.
He called a co-worker to talk about it.
The co-worker called police,
who arrested him as he returned home from the temple.
Unfortunately, hate does not discriminate.
We've seen the rise of hate
and discrimination from anti-Semitism to Islamophobia and much more.
And so by standing together and rejecting hate
and discrimination together,
I believe we'll make sure we get to the ultimate goal
of eliminating this hate that we're experiencing.
The amount of weaponry and ammunition found in the individual's home,
I do not believe that there is any reason why any individual
should need an access to that kind of weaponry and ammunition.
And we should do a lot more in our country to make sure
that no one has access to that kind of weaponry and ammunition,
especially people with the kind of mental health needs
that this individual clearly has.
Anusha Thottakara grew up in Palatine.
Her family attended the temple in Aurora.
This was personal for her and so many others.
Tomorrow, Cook County President Tony Preckwinkle
and members of Congress will join to condemn anti-South Asian hatred
and white supremacist
violence. And when you speak
of politicians getting together to speak on this and to try
to move this forward, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthy
was actually in this temple on Sunday with
his family.
Yes, he's been talking about it.
He's the lead person in the next thing that's gonna happen tomorrow.
He's gonna be joined by Cook County President Tony Preckwinkle,
also like four or five members
of Congress, other elected officials.
As you know, he was there,
he was the one who told us about the festival, this important
festival that happens at this time of year.
It was an important day and thousands of people were there.
He said his parents or his in-laws were also at church.
He thought of all of his family
and realizing that this happened while he was trying to
worship as so many others were.
So this can't go unnoticed or unspoken about.
Every elected official is gonna be out there tomorrow
to talk about this again and to condemn
it.
I'm sure we'll be covering it.
Thank you so much.
We appreciate it.
