Australian defense company Electro Optic Systems or EOS has begun developing a laser weapon against drones . Until now, the company has been known primarily for its cannon systems, but has now decided to add a laser beam to its arsenal, according to Defence24.

As the publication notes, EOS's primary specialty is remotely controlled weapon stations. These are cannons or machine guns mounted on a platform that the operator can control remotely, without exposing themselves to danger. Furthermore, the company has been developing systems for many years to protect ground forces from drone strikes.

One of the results of this work was the Slinger system. According to available data, it was developed based on the popular R400 module, which was significantly modified for counter-drone operations. It now mounts a Bushmaster M230LF 30mm automatic cannon, adapted for programmable ammunition. The barrel is stabilized in four planes, ensuring it maintains a target even while moving.

According to the article, the Slinger's "eyes" are a day/night optical-electronic system and a radar. A weather sensor is also installed separately, as wind and temperature affect shooting accuracy.

The Australians' next step will be so-called non-kinetic defense—that is, destroying targets without projectiles. For this purpose, the company developed the Apollo laser system , a directed-energy weapon. According to the publication, its power can be adjusted between 50 and 150 kW.

Apollo is claimed to be capable of engaging up to 20 drones per minute at a range of up to three kilometers. The publication, in turn, writes that the system is designed to protect both land and naval forces.

The new system has already attracted the attention of European military officials. According to the publication, the Dutch Ministry of Defense recently signed a letter of intent with EOS to manufacture the Apollo system in the Netherlands. Ukraine is also expected to acquire this new laser weapon, which is a nightmare for Putin's army.

As a reminder, the European Union wants to build a so-called "drone wall" along its eastern border from Finland to Bulgaria. As The Washington Post explained, this isn't an actual wall, but a network of sensors, jammers, and military technology designed to detect and intercept small drones.

Europe has acknowledged that shooting down cheap drones with expensive missiles and fighter jets is too cumbersome, so the project will rely on experience proven on the battlefield in Ukraine.
