Breaking news.
A good guy with a gun taking down a bad guy with a gun in Oregon today.
That gunman opening fire at an elementary school,
killing three kids and a teacher.
A bystander seeing what was going on,
chasing the gunman, shooting and killing him.
And we now know that that gunman was a 16-year-old boy.
Thanks for joining us tonight. I'm Luanne Sorrell.
I'm Jack Royer. It is a heartbreaking story out west tonight.
And Fox 35's Chancellor Wynn is live
in the Alert Center with the very latest on this.
Chancellor, that man ran into the building to save lives.
Yeah, Jack, police say that bystander
actually saw the teenager shoot through the locked doors
to the elementary school. The bystander made
a split-second decision to run in right behind the shooter
and confront the teen inside the
hallway. Now, here's what we're learning about
those terrifying few minutes. At 12.59 p.m.,
dispatch gets that first emergency call
from someone in a car outside the school,
reporting a person was shooting at their car.
Over the next two minutes,
Bend police say dispatch was flooded with frantic 911 calls
reporting an active shooter inside Silver Rail Elementary School.
At 1.02 p.m., just minutes after that first call,
officers rushed into the building
and found the alleged shooter dead inside.
Police say four others were killed, including three young children,
ages 5, 8, and 11, and a teacher.
Two others, a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher,
are fighting for their lives in critical condition.
And pursuing him into the school that engaged him.
Our officers entered the building and confirmed the suspect was dead.
Bend police say anywhere between 400 and 450 children attend
Silver Rail Elementary, along with more than 40 staff members.
Federal law enforcement say that if that armed bystander had not run
towards the gunfire, the death toll tonight would be much higher.
Now, Bend police say another official
press briefing is scheduled for tomorrow
as investigators work to learn specifically how
that 16-year-old obtained the shotgun.
At the Alert Center, Chancellor Wynn, Fox 35 News.
Chancellor, thank you.
