The shooter, a 16-year-old local resident, was killed during the incident by a heroic bystander who followed him into the building and engaged him in gunfire.
We begin with a tragic headline
that's become all too familiar across the country.
Another mass shooting at a school, this time in Oregon.
Three elementary school students and a teacher were shot and killed.
It's hard to even say those words.
The accused shooter also dead.
Fox 2's Jessica Duthbeck has been tracking
the latest developments all night.
She joins us live in the newsroom.
And Jess, you've been following this since it broke earlier tonight.
It's unimaginable.
Yeah, Rup, unfortunately the images that you're about
to see are far too familiar for us.
We did get our first batch of facts from law enforcement
regarding what happened in, again, Bend, Oregon, earlier today.
Now, we do know that the shooter
is a 16-year-old Bend, Oregon resident.
That is the town where this happened.
Apparently, the 911 calls came in around 1 o'clock from someone who
was sitting in a vehicle near Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend.
They said he was being shot at by a long gun.
Then the shooter, the 16-year-old, shot his way inside of the school,
shooting locked doors, making his way into the school.
Unclear how far he got in,
but he was able to cause some catastrophic damage.
As you said, Roop, three young children ages 5, 8,
and 11 years old killed along with a teacher, a 7-year-old and a
54-year-old teacher in critical condition right now at the hospital.
Now, the heroic part of all of this is a bystander that was near
the school when this all happened followed that shooter inside
and engaged him in gunfire, eventually killing that shooter.
Police arriving in just two minutes to assess the scene
and get those children reunited with their parents
hours later after making sure that the school was safe.
Now, we did see some images earlier today,
heartbreaking, watching those kids get off the bus,
file off the bus into the arms of their parents.
And we did hear from the superintendent of those schools, Steve Cook.
Take a listen.
No community should have to do what we're doing right now.
I don't have any words for what this community is feeling right now.
I don't think anyone does.
We are heartbroken.
We are horrified.
This is the kind of thing you hear about in other places
and pray that it never happens here.
And it has happened here.
And we know what it's like here in Metro Detroit,
having dealt with several of these types of mass shootings.
Now, a lot of questions remain.
is that shooter related to the school in any capacity
and of course how he got the long gun
that he used in the shooting law enforcement keeping
that information close to the vest
tonight but we will continue to follow this story out
of Oregon reporting live in the newsroom
Jessica Dupnik Fox 2 News yeah and just sadly
when we've seen young people go back into schools
like this oftentimes there are ties
to the school resentment anger whatever it may be uh this we
don't know yet but right now i guess
that's what investigators are trying to piece together
That's right, Rupin.
Several hours after this happened, around 1 o'clock today,
federal investigators, the FBI, was there on scene
joining hundreds of local law enforcement officials,
and that will be part of it to see if there's anything,
what's called leakage, any manifestos,
anything that would indicate a motive here
or if there was any early signifiers that this was going to happen.
And, of course, that's what so many parents
in that community want to know tonight.
A difficult story for any parent, anyone in the community to hear,
but certainly we're thinking of all of our friends
and family members who, of course,
live in Oxford. This can be so triggering,
so hard to hear after hearing this terrible news
out of Bend, Oregon. Jessica Dupnik will
be checking in with you again tonight at 11.
This story is obviously in its very early stages,
and there are so many questions
still unanswered at this hour.
We're going to keep following all of this and keep you updated
as soon as new information becomes available on air
and also online at fox2detroit.com.
If you go to the Fox local app right now,
you'll see a lot of our continuing coverage.
there right now. Another story we're following is...
