Britt Road in Lake County to reopen after two-year closure

A crater big enough to swallow a two-story house and a road shut down for two years. But now, after those years of delays and detours, the wait is finally over for drivers in Lake County. Hurricane Milton left a massive hole in Britt Road back in 2024. Fox 35's Chancellor Wynn live here tonight in the studio. So, Chancellor, tomorrow morning, the road finally reopens. Yeah, Luann, and you would think that many residents would be pretty happy about this road reopening. But we spoke to a few right in that area, and they say they're going to miss the peacefulness. I mean, it's been two years since a car has been allowed to drive down that stretch of road. But on Friday morning, that all changes. Orange barricades and road closed signs will soon be a thing of the past on Britt Road near Gabby Salazar's home. As Friday morning, Lake County says the road will reopen for the first time in two years. I know a lot of people are not happy that this happened because this was like their normal route to get to work. but I am so happy this happened and it's been like two years of peacefulness. Salazar says she's grown fond of the quiet street but back in 2024 Hurricane Milton tore through carving out a 100 foot long 20 foot deep crater that was deep enough to swallow a two-story house and long enough to line up three school buses end to end. My sister lives down the street literally down the curb. So the bad thing is for her to visit me, for me to visit her, it's a 20-minute drive to get there. Now the massive crater is filled in and Britt Road is freshly paved. Once county crews pull away those barricades, Salazar's 20-minute detour to see her sister drops back down to seconds. It's literally not even two minutes down the road. Lake County says upgrades include new paved shoulders and reinforced concrete drainage swales to handle future storms. Plus, there's a new safety rule. Heavy commercial trucks over 10 tons are now banned.
