Well, Anita, we met with the family outside
their home this evening during a prayer vigil.
Not only is this family now dealing with this sudden
and devastating loss, but they're
also now struggling with the fact that no one is behind bars yet.
On October 10th, 22-year-old
Abigail Somoza was outside her home with her mother
in the 2800 block of West 23rd Street.
She was preparing to put up Halloween decorations
when she was shot in the right armpit.
She was rushed to Mount Sinai in critical condition
but did not survive.
Abby loved makeup and she was just starting
her career as a nail technician.
Her father says she dreamed of one day becoming
a certified nursing assistant.
Tonight, her family is encouraging people
to come forward if they have any information.
Her family says they are making it clear that they are not giving up.
They want answers, they want action,
and they want to know why no one has been arrested.
It's a hard thing. I never thought it, you know,
I always saw the news and all these kids dying.
I never felt that pain, but now, I guess, I don't know.
It's a hard thing for anybody to go through.
I know, I'm in their shoes too, I'm afraid.
Been living here for about 40 some years we're living here
and nothing ever like this happened.
But just like them, sometimes I was afraid to point the finger.
I was afraid to, but we should not be afraid of stepping out.
We did reach out to Chicago police again this evening.
They tell us there have been no arrests
and there are no updates at this time.
Anita.
you mentioned the fact that her mother was with her when this happened.
I can't even begin to
imagine that type of horrifying pain. How is she doing?
Yeah, she was there at the prayer vigil
this evening as well.
Devastated, as you can imagine, not ready to talk to us on camera just
yet. Again, she was there just feet away from her daughter
when she was shot and killed. The family
tells me that they've lived there for decades,
almost 50 years now, and they've never seen
anything like this.
And again, they know that people out there,
they feel that people out there know something
and they're just encouraging people
to come forward if they have any information.
We hope that they will.
There are means to do that anonymously.
We appreciate it.
Thank you for the information.
