It's a good thing too,
this young man allegedly announced his intentions,
wrote a manifesto about hate,
and then called his co-workers when he allegedly
went to carry out his plan.
That's what came out in a detention hearing today,
and now a 19 year old is charged with making a terrorist threat
and unlawful use of weapons.
19 year old Alexandros Paparakis was arrested Sunday.
He allegedly told co-workers he planned
to attack the largest Hindu house of worship in Aurora.
Paparakis worked at Taco Bell on
Rand Road. His co-workers say he described himself
as a white supremacist and often used
slurs and hate language and told them what he planned to do.
When a co-worker received
a texted video of Paparakis trying to fire a rifle,
they called 911 to alert authorities.
Police arrested him near his apartment building
and inside they found an AR style rifle, a
tactical vest, eight loaded magazines,
one loaded extended magazine, and 300 rounds of rifle
ammunition, according to court documents.
They also found a gas can and Nazi images.
Former FBI agent Ross Rice says it looks like he intended
to carry out violence.
It's serious to make the threat,
and it's even more serious when you take overt steps
to follow through with that threat.
And he had definitely done that here
by securing weapons and firearms
and having plans that he had already drawn up and shared with
others. We're fortunate that he bragged about what he
was gonna do or boasted to co-workers
and that these co-workers and other people took his threat seriously
and contacted law enforcement.
Well, that law enforcement, Palatine Police,
they are working with the FBI. There could be
some federal charges here.
And they expect to give out more details about this alleged
mass shooting plot at a news conference here
at the police station tomorrow.
Reporting live in Palatine, I'm Joni Lum. Anita?
Joni, it's very eye-opening, so disturbing. But did authorities say
if he had named a specific target?
In his manifesto, he allegedly said that
he had been planning it for two years
and that in the last couple of months,
he started researching a place.
He googled the place. He looked at some maps.
authorities have not said if they have determined the place
but apparently this
young man was looking into one particular place in Aurora okay a lot of
people on high alert thank you so much we appreciate it
