A morning run in Mesa turned into a rescue operation after
a local jogger spotted a large
owl that was trapped on a power pole and called 911.
Good thing they did. Fox 10's Steve Nielsen
shows us how it took a team of experts to pull off this rescue.
Yeah, they did exactly the right
thing. So after they got the call, Mesa firefighters,
SRP linemen, and an avian protection specialist
all teamed up to free that female owl from the power line.
And let's take a look at how they
found her this morning, just dangling there by a single wing.
If you're wondering how this all
happened, officials say she somehow got entangled on fishing line first
and then that fishing line
got caught on an SRP power pole as she was flying by.
Crews carefully cut the line, they lowered the
bird, they wrapped her in a blanket
and from there she was taken to Liberty Wildlife's intensive care
unit where wildlife experts removed the fishing line from her wings.
They looked into her, they
assessed the condition,
and because the jogger reported that incident early, they say the owl
avoided serious injuries.
So she didn't have the heat stress issues that we usually see in
summertime with rescues.
She has a great weight on her, so that keeps her healthy and strong.
So really, we're doing observation with her here
to make sure we're not seeing any other
signs of tissue damage.
Yeah, we're told the owl's doing great right now, eating well,
resting up in the ICU. And if all goes well over the next day or two,
she'll be fully cleared to
be released back into the wild.
Rescuers also remind everyone, do what the jogger did. If you
ever spot an animal trapped near high voltage lines,
don't try to get close. Just call 911
or SRP right away. Let the pros handle it. Steve Nielsen, Fox 10 News.
