First tonight at 6 o'clock, breaking news
at the Arizona Capitol Complex where there is a hazmat situation.
The FBI, DPS, and firefighters,
they're all on the scene at the Executive Tower.
That's where staff opened an envelope,
and inside of it contained white powder.
That tower houses the offices of Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs,
Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, and a lot of others.
Fox 10's Taylor Wartz joins us live now on location with more. Taylor?
Steve, still a very active scene here at the state capitol
as the executive tower remains evacuated.
As you say, DPS and the FBI, a bunch of agencies right
on scene here investigating a suspicious white powder
found in an envelope by a staff member from Adrian Fontes' office,
the Arizona Secretary of State.
Let me step aside. We've gotten a better view here since
our last live shot 10 minutes ago.
So now you can see still a very active scene
of Phoenix police on scene, Phoenix fire, DPS, the FBI.
And Laura, if we can even zoom in on that hazmat crew right there.
We were told that they responded rather quickly,
immediately isolating the exposed staff member.
They turned off floor ventilation inside the affected area,
cleared the building as soon as they could.
and then DPS also moved in.
Secretary Fontes issued a statement praising his staff's quick
response, adding, we will not be scared out of doing
our jobs on behalf of the voters of Arizona.
We also, if we aren't showing it already,
have some video just into our newsroom from Sky Fox
for a more aerial view because you can see a lot
of streets are blocked off. This is a very wide
scene. We just got closer at this moment.
And the interesting thing about this too, we're learning
is that this incident does not appear isolated.
We're hearing that the FBI, U.S. Capitol Police
and the Postal Service have actually launched
a nationwide investigation into similar suspicious
mailings targeted at congressional
and election offices across the country. So federal authorities
are warning all government personnel
to treat incoming mail with extreme caution. They're
saying they will try to intercept anything they can,
but there is not a guarantee. So they're
urging everyone to use extreme caution.
Still very busy here right now. So if you are headed
this way, I would recommend you take an alternate route
because traffic is building up around these
closed streets. And once we get more information
on what's been resolved here and exactly what
happened, we'll be sure to let you know.
At the state capitol, Taylor Wartz, Fox 10 News.
That certainly ups this nationally,
knowing that there's other threats going on there too.
All right, Taylor, thank you so much for that live report there.
