French President Emmanuel Macron said the country's navy on Monday seized an oil tanker traveling south of the Indian Ocean island of Reunion, suspected of belonging to the Russian shadow fleet. According to Associated Press Macron announced the interception in a post on X. "The French Navy boarded the oil tanker DF Peak, suspected of sailing under a false flag and involved in illegal fuel transport activities," he said. The ship -flying a Beninese flag, with its crew on board, was diverted and escorted by French Navy vessels to an anchorage off the coast of Réunion for judicial investigation, officials said. France is "determined to fight all forms of illicit trafficking, wherever they occur," Macron said. Oil revenue is a key part of Russia’s economy, allowing President Vladimir Putin to pour money into the war effort against Ukraine without worsening inflation for everyday people and avoiding a currency collapse. Russia is believed to be using a fleet of hundreds of ships to evade international sanctions imposed over the war. France and other countries have vowed to crack down on the sanction-busting so-called “shadow fleet.” This is not the first time that France has intercepted tankers in international waters. Tankers previously intercepted by France include the Deyna, boarded in the Mediterranean Sea in March. Another tanker, the Grinch, intercepted in the Mediterranean in January, was released in February after paying a multimillion-euro penalty.
