The Defense Forces' offensive in the Liman direction is significant not only for the liberation of territory but also for the manner in which it occurred. This opinion was expressed by a veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian War, a former company commander in the Aidar Battalion, and the director of the National Antarctic Scientific Center, on Radio NV .
"Even what was achieved specifically during Operation Vivaldi is no longer at the tactical level, but it's not at the strategic level either. This is what's called the operational level. That is, at the operational level, the initiative has already been seized. And that's important, but how it happened is far more important. Essentially, new methods were tested," Diky said.
He added that this refers to a new reform of the Ukrainian army under the command of Mykhailo Drapatoy, Andriy Biletsky, and Denys Prokopenko ("Radis"), which has already begun to yield results. "Our army has developed completely new tactics in the current war, with its vast combat zone, infiltration zone, and extensive use of drones. And these new tactics have proven highly effective. Everything has been put into practice: from the completely different interaction between units to the completely different prioritization of the enemy's defenses at what stage and depth," Diky explained. The expert noted that this operation did not actually involve classic assault actions:
"First, there was a very skillful clearing of the enemy's rear, effectively cutting the enemy off from its own rear. Without entering, entirely remotely. After that, waves of drones adapted for various tasks followed. And only then did attack aircraft enter the territories liberated from the enemy.
"That is, they didn't assault the enemy at all. They first pushed them out remotely, and then moved in to clear the area. This is actually very important because it's scalable."
Ukrainian Defense Forces, as part of Operation Vivaldi, liberated three more settlements in the Liman area of Donetsk Oblast, according to a report from the DeepState monitoring project.
"Ukrainian Defense Forces have liberated Ridkodub, Novoye, and Katerynivka, and have also regained control near Novomykhailivka and Lypove," analysts noted in a Telegram post .
The villages of Ridkodub, Novoye, and Katerynivka are located adjacent to each other north of Lyman in the Donetsk region. Also nearby are the villages of Novomykhailivka and Lypove. All of them belong to the Kramatorsk district. Third Army Corps Commander Andriy Biletsky reported on the completion of the third phase of Operation Vivaldi. Meanwhile, the operation continues.
"As a result of our actions, control over the settlements of Karpovka and Novomykhailivka was fully restored, Ridkodub and Katerynivka were completely liberated, and a key enemy stronghold at the bridgehead of the large settlement of Novoye was captured," Biletsky emphasized on Telegram .
According to him, during this stage of Operation Vivaldi, it was possible to recapture another 51 km² of Ukrainian territory, and since the beginning of the offensive – 176 km². "This stage was a turning point for the entire operation. The logic of the fighting on the bridgehead was that whoever controlled the heights around Novyi would hold the initiative. To breach the enemy's key strongholds, we used our know-how—old Soviet armored personnel carriers, converted into kamikaze missile launchers," Biletsky explained.
Furthermore, enemy casualties amounted to over 2,000 personnel. More than 250 Russian soldiers were captured by Ukrainian forces.
