Military observer Alexander Kovalenko analyzed the losses of Russian occupation forces during the third week of September. He published the details and conclusions on his blog. The third week of September 2026 has ended, and it's time to take stock of the preliminary results regarding the proportion of enemy losses and the results of the seizure of Ukrainian territory, especially given that there are many things that need to be correlated now, primarily the information that emerged during this third week regarding the liberated territories in the Liman direction. This is something we all suspected or knew about, but couldn't voice or quantify. So, during the third week of September, the ROV had the opportunity to occupy an area of 15.8 km² of Ukrainian territory... And here the nuances immediately begin.
The fact is that the commander of the Third Army Corps, Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky, officially announced, or rather, confirmed, the implementation of Operation Vivaldi in the Liman direction on September 15, essentially giving the green light to monitoring resources to mark the territories liberated as part of this operation. Frankly, the liberated territories currently being noted were definitely not taken under the control of the 3rd Army Corps yesterday, or a week or two ago, but rather somewhat earlier… But this is official information, which confirms what we discussed back in July and August – correlation, real correlation, can stretch out not over weeks, but over months, so we note the following figures: actual advance of the DOV - 15.8 km²; The actual proportion is 19.3 km². If we talk about a three-week framework, the indicators are as follows: actual advance of the DOV - 121.3 km²; The actual proportion is 79.4 km². That is, the actual proportion, despite the intensity of the ROV offensive actions, still remains much lower than the average statistical indicators in weekly and monthly terms, even in comparison with 2025. What's more interesting is what happens next. Losses. During the third week of September, the ROV lost 10,880 bodies killed, wounded, and captured. And this, I must say, is one of the highest enemy casualty figures on a weekly basis since the beginning of 2026! Over the three weeks of September, losses totaled 31,240 bodies, which, while cautious, hints at an absolute record for monthly losses for the ROV in 2026. I wouldn't be surprised if this figure exceeds 43 thousand by the end of the month.

In turn, the proportion of losses of DOM per 1 km² is in weekly terms, if we consider the actual indicator of 689 bodies per 1 km². If we consider the real proportion, then we are talking about a minus. The number of combat engagements this week totaled 1,684, a fairly average figure since June, and the average daily rate was 240 combat losses per day. Casualties per engagement averaged a stable 6 casualties per second. The effectiveness of assault operations is 107 combat clashes per 1 km² of captured territory, which is almost 3 times worse than the effectiveness of the first week of September, and if we take into account the actual proportion, we are talking about negative indicators. Thus, we see that while the loss indicators for the ROVs increased during the third week of September, there was absolutely no positive dynamics in the capture of territories, but the indicators of the effectiveness of the capture of territories increased. Andriy Biletsky's initial and preliminary statements and the 3rd Army Corps' publications regarding Operation Vivaldi allow us to assess the real situation in at least one operational zone, but positive news will eventually arrive from others. Autumn 2026 could indeed become a crisis for the ROV, especially in the Limansky direction.
