The Ukrainian Defense Forces shot down a Russian Geran-5 small cruise missile using a SPYS interceptor drone. The video was published by the GAU community on its X page .
"We have received video from a reliable source showing the successful interception of a Geranium-5 by the new SPYS interceptor drone, developed by the German-Ukrainian joint venture Quantum WIY Industries," the statement said.
It is noted that the drone is still undergoing combat testing, but the first interceptions are already taking place.
According to the Ukrainian portal "Military ," the footage shows the device being shot down at a speed of approximately 200 km/h, likely due to a technical malfunction in the Russian missile's jet engine.
In July, the Ukrainian company WIY Drones unveiled the SPYS interceptor, capable of shooting down targets at speeds of up to 600 km/h. A company representative stated that the interceptor's primary target is the Geran missile launchers. The developers reported that to enable the interceptor to reach such speeds, they developed their own electronic components. This allows the drone to operate under extreme loads.
The SPYS drone uses Ukrainian-made engines from Motor-G. It also has a 300-gram warhead, can hit targets at a range of 12 km, and has a flight time of 5 minutes.
As reported, Ukraine is deploying new high-speed interceptor drones to counter Russian jet-powered attack drones. One of these drones has already destroyed a Russian Geran-5 during combat testing.
Ukrainian company Wild Hornets announced that its tactical air defense unit used a new Sting S interceptor to destroy a Geran-5 jet drone . According to a company spokesperson, it was one of several such drones shot down in recent days. In addition, during the tests, the interceptors destroyed about a dozen slower Geranium-4 jet drones.
The new Sting S is an evolution of the popular Sting interceptor, manufactured by Wild Hornets. The aircraft is currently undergoing combat testing, and once completed, the company plans to begin serial production.
