Russian military forces have recently been using drones to strike Ukrainian checkpoints and attack civilian infrastructure near the border, forcing border guards to suspend operations. This was stated by State Border Guard Service press secretary Andriy Demchenko during a telethon, responding to a question about border security.
"As soon as we began striking checkpoints in the Odessa region, we saw that the enemy, while attacking the western regions, was effectively striking the border zone as well. In the immediate vicinity of the border, near the checkpoints. This was clearly visible to everyone in the area of the Yagodin checkpoint. A gas station on the way to the checkpoint was attacked…" Demchenko said.
According to him, the enemy also targeted railway infrastructure near the border. Yesterday, September 17, the Russians also launched an attack – a Shahed missile struck several kilometers from the border. "Therefore, the course of action during alerts, during such a threat, is to suspend checkpoint operations in areas where an air raid alert has been issued due to Russia's actions, in order to prevent crowding. This is to prevent deaths or injuries if the enemy directly attacks a checkpoint," explained a representative of the State Border Guard Service. He added that since the end of last week, high activity has been recorded from repeater transmitters located in Belarus. These installations help the Russian military direct attack drones to western Ukraine. Therefore, Demchenko said, all statements by Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko about "non-support for the war" have proven to be empty.
According to Demchenko, military exercises, training sessions, and the like are held almost constantly on Belarusian territory; for example, command and staff exercises were recently held there.
"This kind of thing happens very often in Belarus. It's easier to calculate how much time a year goes by without it. It's either exercises, combat readiness checks, testing of specific components, reinforcement of a particular area, or the creation of additional brigades... This is more of an informational ploy, stemming from Belarus's need to shift responsibility and divert attention from the fact that they are under Russian influence," the press secretary said.
Demchenko added that the Belarusian authorities are constantly shifting responsibility for their own actions to Ukraine and Europe. He stated that there is currently no military force on the border with Belarus that could invade Ukraine for provocations or the like. However, the press secretary does not rule out that the situation on the border could change at any moment.
